Biddeford, Maine is a small town located in the Cumberland Valley region of northeastern Maine. The population was 5,546 as of the 2010 census. Biddeford is known for its milling and fishing industries, and for its scopes and optics businesses. The first scopes made in Biddeford were designed by Elisha Gray in 1825. The town's first clock was installed in 1826, and local legend has it that the first lens to be used for astronomical observation was developed by George Washington Carver here in 1847. The town's first post office opened on December 6, 1856. In 1870, Biddeford became the site of the world's largest telescope dedication ceremonies when President Ulysses S. Grant dedicated a new telescope called the Seventh-Magellan Telescope at Mount Holyoke College. Biddeford also played an important role during World War II as a manufacturing center for optical products related to radar technology and aerial photo bombing. Biddeford is part of the Portland-Worcester-Newport Beach, ME Metropolitan Statistical Area. Biddeford's history dates back to 1692 when it was known as "Bidderford". It is named after Captain John Bidder and his family who settled there in 1712. The first settler in what is now Biddeford was John Bidder who arrived in 1712 and built the first house on the current site of Biddeford. The townspeople soon discovered they needed a market for their goods so they set up a store on Main Street in 1727. In 1758 Samuel Moulton opened his own store and became one of the early merchants in town. By 1800, there were fifteen stores and three distilleries in town with a total population of 3,000 people. In 1836, Gershom Moulton donated land to build a Methodist church which became known as First Congregational Church (now Stroudsburg Wesleyan Methodist Episcopal Church). In 1845 Revs Jno Atherton and Augustus Waddell founded the present day School District No 2 which included much of central Maine including current day Biddeford. At that time there were only two schools within the school district - one for boys and one for girls - both located on Union Road north of Center Street. With development around them come changes to how people behaved - some good while others bad: In 1868 an act was passed authorizing streets to be paved with hardwood instead of turf which led to increased business along Main Street; however this change also caused problems due to noise from trucks operating down Main Street during harvest times which caused many residents to leave town for years at a time; finally by 1903 all street paving had been completed with only small areas still left unpaved which led to further trouble because most residences were situated close enough together that vehicles could easily get into every lane etc.; this situation continued until 1935 when pavement construction began anew on all streets throughout town using crushed stone rather than turf and today it continues unchanged except for minor resurfacing projects occasionaly carried out on behests from village trustees or community members

The first people to live in what is now Biddeford were the Duchamps who came from Quebec in 1602 and built a cabin on the site of present day Biddeford High School. A post office called Biddeford was established in 1836, and remained operational until it was discontinued in 1954. In 1868, an act of Congress authorized the purchase by the State of Penobscot County of all land east of Orleans River for its purpose of erecting a military fortifications known as Fort Lawlor. The fortification became known as Fort Lawlor after Major-General John J. Lawlor who purchased it from local residents in 1870. The fortifications were completed by 1874 and served as a garrison for peninsular troops during both World Wars I and II. In 1922, Penobscot County joined with other counties within Maine to form the new state of Maine; Biddeford became one of its two townships (the other being Portland). A post office called Biddeford was established at the junction of Main Street and Indian Trail (now North Main Street) about 1800; it operated until 1865.
