The town rapidly grew and by 1830 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1868, the railroad was abandoned and Biddeford became an independent town. The first settlers in what is now Biddeford were men from Sweden who arrived during the mid 1800s looking for land to settle. They named their new settlement after their patron saint - St Botolph's church was built in 1820 and naming rights have been held by the municipality ever since. By 1830, Biddeford had a post office and began receiving mail from all over New England as well as Canada. In 1868, when the railway line between Portland and Hancock was abandoned, development of Biddeford began swiftly with businesses opening up including hotels, grocery stores, butcher shops etcetera which helped support rapid growth until World War II when agriculture took over as the mainstay of local economy%. In 1814, the town of Biddeford was granted a charter by the Maine General Assembly. The town was named for John Bidwell, an early settler in what is now Biddeford. The first local business was a store and post office on the corner of Main and Quebec streets. In 1835, Biddeford became a full city with its own government. The population reached 2,500 by 1850. The downtown area experienced rapid growth as businesses moved in to take advantage of new transportation options and opportunities for commerce. Commercial buildings were built along Unitarian Street and Tryon Avenue, while Southampton Row developed along Frenchman Creek. Bidwell Park developed along the riverfront in north-central Biddeford, providing recreational areas for locals and tourists alike.
