Biddeford, Maine is a small town located in central Maine. The population was 6,563 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous town in Cumberland County and the second most populous town in the state of Maine after Portland. The first settler in Biddeford was Samuel Morse who arrived there on February 26, 1802. After staying for five years he returned to Boston and started a new business importing goods from England. He named his business Morse Bros. & Co., which still operates today as a grocery store and department store. Samuel Morse died on December 17, 1837 at the age of 73 years old. In 1836, three men by the name of Hubbard moved to what is now Biddeford from Westford, Massachusetts with their six children and began to farm land that they would later sell to other families. They built a log cabin which they called Hubbard Station on what is now State Street near where Main Street meets US 1A today. The Hubbers served as innkeepers until 1870 when they sold their property back to the government for development into an agricultural colony called Fort Kent Manor (now part of Dexter). The first post office in Biddeford was established on October 15, 1838 under the name Hubbardville (later renamed Fort Kent Manor). In 1861 it changed its name again to Biddeford after Major General John Huddleston Bidwell who had become Governor of Maine upon its admission into statehood in 1860. The present day Post Office building has been located here since 1840.
