Biddeford, Maine is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. Biddeford is part of the Portland–South Portland–Ferry Pass City metropolitan area. It is located on the confluence of the rivers Kennebec and Penobscot. The town started as a small village in 1800 on land that now includes most of what today constitutes Biddeford. The first settler was Silas Robbins, who purchased land from the Indians in 1795. Over time, other settlers came to Biddeford and it grew into a small town with a population of about 150 people by 1810. In 1824, Biddeford became an incorporated town when its citizens ratified a petition requesting city status. In 1835-36, when there were several earthquakes in the area which caused extensive damage and loss of life, Mayor Amos Wigglesworth ordered all homes to be destroyed to prevent them from being used as targets for future quakes. In 1849-50 (during Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee), local students traveled to England for three weeks to attend an agricultural fair at Manchester Downs where they learned about raising horses and cattle there. Upon their return they organized a market stall which became one of the most successful businesses in town during that time period

However, due to increasing urbanization and railroad development, Biddeford experienced a decline in population during the 20th century. Today, there are only a few thousand people living in Biddeford.
