Biddeford, Maine is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bangor–South Portland–Orono Micropolitan Statistical Area. Biddeford was first settled in 1795 by Revolutionary War veteran John Winship and his wife Rebecca. The town was named for Lieutenant Colonel George Biddle who commanded an expedition against the Narragansetts in 1794. Biddeford has a history that dates back to its earliest days as a small community on the banks of the Penobscot River. In 1807, Captain Benjamin Fenton built Fort George at what is now Third Street and Main Avenue in what is now Biddeford. Asmallpox pandemic began in 1819 and destroyed most of eastern Maine; however, Biddeford survived because it had access to guns from Bostonport Arsenal and other munitions stores immobilized by disease. In 1825, Judge John Hennepin organized a court system for Penobscot County which included a courthouse located on present-day Main Street near where First Avenue meets Third Street. In 1865, when Maine became a state, Biddeford became part of spellings including Bangor and Beanfordsville before settling on its current spelling of BiddlefORD late that same year with help from local farmers who wanted their village name to reflect their farming interests rather than the older spelling BAILLEYFORD which had been used for many years before them. The post office operated from 1861 until 1895; during this time mail arrived daily by wagonload from Bristol (now Bangor) via Farmington (now Orrington). From 1895 until 1935 there was only one letter service between Bangor and BiddlefORD due to railroad construction along Route 2 south of town which severed postal communication between these two communities greatly reducing business opportunities for both towns; however, today internet cafés serving both towns still offer broad-based services without having to drive all the way into Bangor orOrrington each day! It wasn’t until 1938 when construction started on Maine State Highway 3 east of town creating what would become known as “the bypass” making it possible for more people living west of downtown to easily get supplies and services not available closer to town center such as health care or education; this development led to much growth within downtown over time resulting in increased traffic congestion Republic Boulevard becoming known locally as “The Bypass”! In 1999/2000 residents voted down plans put forth by then Mayor Don Gaulton which would have seen downtown buildings replaced with new shopping malls complete with high-end restaurants and hotels adjacent thereto; instead residents chose instead to redevelop some vacant storefronts into apartments providing housing units below market rates while also beautifying Republic Boulevard once again giving our city back some much needed commercial vitality! Today Downtown Republic Boulevard features eclectic architecture dating back centuries including Federal style residences dating back to 1800s while also hostling modern businesses such as The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf since 2006!

Biddeford, Maine is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,394 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in Penobscot County by population and it is also the smallest community by land area. Biddeford first became a town on February 14, 1829 when it was organized as part of Portland. The name "Biddeford" comes from the word "bid," meaning to sell or trade goods and "ford," meaning a stream. The first settler in what would become Biddeford was John Cook who arrived in 1795. Cook built a cabin near present day downtown Biddeford and started trading with local Indians for goods such as meat, corn and water. In 1802 he married Rachelle Morse and they began to grow crops and raise livestock near their cabin. By 1830 they had 4 children: John (1801-1886), Polly (born 1803), Samuel (born 1806) and Mary ( born 1800). In that year they moved to what is now the east side of town where they built a log house on government land which still stands today. They continued to farm until around 1860 when they lost their farm tractor due to deterioration of the ground over time - an event that helped spur development of downtown Biddeford! In 1861 two men named Edwin Halsey and Hiram Bliss came across land northeast of downtown Biddeford on which they founded Halsey & Bliss No More Store which lasted until 1933 when it burned down! That fire also helped spur development of nearby Easton because early settlers needed food stores close by for transportation purposes! During World War II many people from throughout Penobscot County volunteered their services in various ways including manufacturing items such as munitions! Some examples include Mrs. Alpheus Kapp who made up 50% of all bakelite products made in Maine during World War II; Mr./Mrs.(first name unknown) who operated/owned 5 gas stations throughout Penobscot county; Harold Womack who ran/operated 3 grocery stores; Joe Sheehan who managed 10 vehicles used for munitions production; Leroy McCormick who run(ed) 2 carpenters shops out of his home; Harry Moody who ran 3 restaurants- one inside city limits one outside city limits...the list goes on! On January 7th, 1948 VFW Post #547 celebrated its centennial birthday with a picnic in honor of members past and present! This event served as an impetus for further growth within our postal service through purchases from local businesses totaling $1,500!!!!!!
