Biddeford, Maine is a town in Sagadahoc County, Maine, United States. The population was 909 at the 2010 census. Biddeford is one of the few towns in Maine with a post office that still operates as an open-mailer service. The first Europeans to visit what is now Biddeford were the French sailing vessels "Le Vaisseau" and "L'Aigle". They sailed up the Penobscot River on November 5, 1605, and landed at what is now known as North Head on December 3rd. Captain John Smith of HMS Discovery explored the region in 1608 when he mapped part of present-day Maine. In 1802, Captain James Cook charted much of this area during his third trip around Cape Horn and named it King's Sound after George II of Great Britain. In 1822, John Warner founded a popular grist mill in what is now Biddeford which became one of the largest flour mills in New England. Warner also built a sawmill and boatyard here which remain operational today. The town's most famous resident may be entrepreneur shipbuilder Arthur Ashe who moved to Biddeford from Boston in 1915 to found the Ashe Boatbuilding Company which built many famous ships including America (the first cross-Atlantic passenger liner), Celtic (the world's first fiberglass ferryboat), Queen Elizabeth 2 (the only ocean liner ever designed by American architects), and Falmouth clipper ship HMHS Britannia (which carried Prince Charles and his wife Diana Princess of Wales across Atlantic Ocean). Biddeford residents have played an important role in both state government and local politics for over two centuries. A number of notable men have come from or been born into this community: Ulysses S. Biddeford, Maine is a town in the United States located in Hancock County. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Biddeford's history can be traced back to 1795 when it was founded by three men from New England: John Bidwell, Samuel Underwood and Ebenezer Sears. The town was originally called "Bidford" after Bidwell and Underwood, who both died in 1799. It became known as "Biddeford" because of Ebenezer Sears' purchase of a piece of land there in 1802. In 1806, the town received its charter from the Maine Legislature and became an incorporated community with a government under a Mayor and five Aldermen. The first school in Biddeford opened on Center Street in 1814. By 1827, all but two houses had been built and the town had a population of about 100 people. In 1828, Biddeford made headlines when it voted to secede from Massachusetts due to increasing tensions over taxes levied by that state legislature. The vote followed similar votes by other towns throughout Hancock County over grievances such as poor roads, low prices for goods imported into the area from abroad, inadequate public services and lack of representation in local legislatures. After some debates among residents about whether or not to continue independence ( voters ultimately chose not to break away), Biddeford joined Hancock County on July 1st, 1830 under the name "Bangor". In 1840/41 major floods destroyed much of downtown Biddeford and many homes; however repairs were made quickly and much damage was prevented future flooding. One early resident recalled: “The most fearful inundation ever experienced upon this continent took place here within our recollection – extensive wallsowing around our dwellings - completely washing them out – including several large families who resided upon high ground near the river’s mouth – so that even their clothes were lost!” Another early resident wrote: “We are informed by reliable sources that during these terrible times there never did exist such great devastation as has now taken place since these tidings reached us; every house is either swept away or extensively ruined… Houses stood as if unharmed until very lately – then suddenly they tottered down like trees which have grown sickly tired of being supported by their limbs- broke open whole or nearly so before toppling headlong into desolation…. Many interesting old documents still remain behind which we may glean many particulars respecting our earliest settlers hereabouts & also respecting their descendants natives living in various parts of this country." On January 11th 1861,[5] following passage of Act No 483 entitled An Act To establish Banks And Post Offices In Bangor Township And Other Places therein And For Other Purposes——Bidenfreight post office between Bangorport & Portland[6]—-the first mail service between Bangorport & Portland—was established at Biddefords post office
Biddeford, Maine is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from an English place-name meaning "burden" or "tax." The first settler in what is now Biddeford was John Morse who arrived in 1796. He built a small cabin on the east side of the river and named it Morse Landing. A post office was established in 1807 and renamed Biddeford after John Morse's brother Ebenezer Biddeford. By 1831, most of present-day Penobscot County had been settled and the county seat moved to Bangor. In 1834, selectmen voted to move the county courthouse from Bangor to Biddeford because they felt that it would be more logical for all county officials to live within one locality. The first courthouse building was completed in 1840 and served as the county seat until 1861 when it moved to Augusta due to land seizures by the federal government during theCivil War. The towns of Easton and Westboro were organized around 1880 with both namesakes meeting at a schoolhouse which still stands today on Baldwin Road near downtown Easton. In 1888, part of present-day Penobscot County became detached from Mendocino County and formed its own government with its own sheriff and court system called Cumberland County Court System. After several years of turmoil caused by splits among local officials over control of resources (including lands), Cumberland County Court System merged into Penobscot Superior Court System in 1899 which remains our current judicial system today. A post office called Biddeford opened on July 16, 1916 and remained open until December 15th 1958 when it closed due to low mail volume combined with otherpost offices closing throughout eastern Maine due to World War II shortages of paper products
