Biddeford, Maine is a town in Penobscot County, Maine. The population was 1,418 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Penobscot County and the second-largest municipality of any size in Maine after Lewiston. Biddeford is part of the Bangor–Auburn Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Biddeford was Nicholas Webster who came to what is now the town on July 4, 1794 with his family from Farmington, Connecticut. Webster had been an experienced surveyor and landowner in that area before coming to Maine. He named his new township after his friend and business partner William Pitts (1763-1838), who had also settled near Bathurst, New Brunswick about one mile north of Biddeford on April 6, 1794. The first post office was established at Biddeford on December 15, 1807 by Rufus King under contract with Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail as part of a group of nine postmasters appointed by Governor John Wentworth to improve delivery of mail through the interior colonies.[1] In 1828, when Penobscot County was created from portions of Cumberland and Sagadahoc Counties,[2] Biddeford became a separate village within its boundaries. In 1887 it amalgamated with neighboring Auburn to form what is nowPenobscot County.[3] In 1907 it annexe d Auburn again to form what are now both Penobscot County townships. On November 24, 1917 a tornado touched down near Bigelow Hill outside downtown Biddeford[4][5] which destroyed many homes including those used as stores or dwellings; however no injuries were reported among either population center residents or those living elsewhere during that fateful evening hours just days prior thereto. That tornado remains one of history's most devastating natural disasters affecting this region – even surpassing Hurricane Floyd which struck southeastern Georgia on September 15th 1999[6]), leaving damage totaling $100 million (USD) upon its aftermath less than two weeks later! Although situated some ninety miles inland from coastal areas frequented by summer tourists due largely to its remoter location relative to larger metropolitan populations such as Philadelphia & New York City,[7] over time visitors have become increasingly drawn here for its namesake river valley’s diverse microclimate characterized by cool but mild winters throughout winter months while summers are warm but humid; combined with tight-knit community spirit fostering interactions between all constituent parts – whether villagers employed within their respective businesses or individuals working freelance outside these same professional ranks; then there’s simply being surrounded by nature itself - taking in views such as rolling hills covered in snowmelt & rivers running through incredibly lush green valleys plentifully endowed with flora & fauna galore! Biddeford is a town in Maine, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the only municipality in Maine with a population of over 10,000. Biddeford has been inhabited since prehistoric times and its first mention in writing is from 1219 AD. The current town was formed by combining two small villages - Biddeford and Deerfield - in 1881. The town was first settled by English settlers during the early 1600s as part of what is now Rhode Island. In 1636, Sir George Carteret erected a ford on the Penobscot River near present-day Biddeford to facilitate trade with France. By 1720, most of what would become Biddeford had been founded and developed as a small farming community surrounded by forests. A school was established in 1793 and one of the earliest churches built in Maine – Meeting House Church – followed soon afterwards. During World War II, many local businesses participated in production for mobilization purposes such as boots and shoes, munitions manufacturing and aircraft fabricating. One such business closed its doors forever after but left an imprint on Biddingfords history when it became known as "The Rubber Company" because much of their product came from tires used by American military vehicles during World War II In 1951, when Maine became an official US state, Biddleford became part of the newly formed Portland County On July 1st 1976, following passage of The Local Government Reform Act (Public Law 93-579), all municipalities within Portland County were merged into one entity called "Biddleford". This created a new municipal government which included both rural areas as well as more centrally located towns like Beaulieu and Easton In 2000, following years of growth spurred by tourism initiatives spearheaded by then Mayor John Lettsworth Jr., construction began on what would become known as Lettsworth Park State Recreation Area – home to world-renowned fishing pondside trails that lead visitors through centuries old oak trees; hiking/biking trails that meander through rolling farmland; tennis Courts; picnic pavilions; playgrounds; an amphitheater featuring world-class music performances; and extensive commercial development including restaurants and boutiques . In 2006, after five years without any major project breakneck progress being made due largely to political gridlock plaguing city hall between Mayor Raymond James (D) & Councilor Melvin Morse (R), Lettsworth Park State Recreation Area underwent major renovation costing $27 million dollars which include: installation of new water systems including treated effluent treatment back up tanks for each pondside cabin & cottage; replacement or expansion of sidewalks along trails & entrances leading into park areas; installation or enhancement of lighting throughout park areas including Harmony Road exit leading into park . According to press reports at the time it was announced this project “marked perhapsthe biggest ever investment” made outside downtown Portland . With completion set for late 2011 or early 2012 there have been mixed reactions from locals about how quickly work actually got done given that some roads were still not paved until after hurricane Irene hit later that year
