Biddeford, Maine is a small town in western Maine. It was founded in 1849 by Captain Nathaniel Biddle and his wife Anne. The original population of Biddeford was just over 100 people. In 1905, the town had a population of 588 people. By the early 21st century, the population of Biddeford had fallen to just over 150 people. However, the community has been active and vibrant for nearly two centuries. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Biddeford were Captain Nathaniel and Anne Biddle. They came from Connecticut with their families in 1849. The bermuda Plantation was located about three miles south of present day Biddeford on Route 1A.Captain Nathaniel and Anne soon started trading goods with local Native Americans, selling goods such as meat, fish, flour, tobacco, horses and saddles at various trading posts around their settlement site. In 1855 Captain Nathaniel moved his family to a new land east of the river that became known as Bangor because it lay on the edge of Acadia National Park (now Bangor County). He built a new home there which still stands today called "Nathaniel's Landing". After spending some time living there they returned to Bangor where they continued trading until after General John Ayer's battle at Monmouth Heights on July 4th, 1814 when they left for Canada with all their goods in tow Thankful for not being captured or killed along with many others during this engagement! Over time other families also arrived including Mr & Mrs Wallis who moved from Easton in 1856; Mr & Mrs Laughlin who bought land east of Bangor in 1860; Father D’Angelo who bought land north of Bangor ca 1870; Bros Shea who bought land west of Bangor from Capt Elisha Goode in 1865; Sisters O’Brien who purchased land northside near present day Aberdeen from Capt John Lyons circa 1880; Sisters Purdy Purchased land southwest corner between Aberdeen and Northumberland Streets ca 1890 There were also many immigrants coming through Portlandport including Germans (Pfeffer), Italians (Luzzatto), Irishmen (Walsh) and Poles (Dziewulski) but these arrivals are not typically considered part of the history or culture associated with present-day Biddeford
