Biddeford was one of the earliest towns in Maine to adopt guns and ammunition. In 1785, the town passed an ordinance regulating gun owners and sellers. It also prohibited firing from houses or gardens. The ordinance remained in effect until 1827.
Biddeford is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bangor-Auburn, Maine Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1784 by Captain John returns and three other men from Yarmouth who had come to trade with the French in that year. At first it was called "BidDEFORD". In 1826 Biddeford became a separate town when its border with Indian Territory changed from water to land as part of the treaty resulting from the War of 1812. On July 14, 1830, Biddeford's incorporation as a town was approved by the Massachusetts General Court and its first mayor was Simeon Holmes. On December 12, 1840, an act of Congress granted title to parcels of land lying east and south of Main Street in what is now downtown Biddeford to Professor George Ticknor for his support for education in that area. The main building on this tract remains standing today as Ticknor Hall on Woodward Avenue near State Street (now North Avenue). This gift soon led to more than one hundred schools being built throughout central Maine. In 1865–66 a new courthouse replaced an old jail which had been burned down during the American Civil War. It took until 1893 for Biddeford's post office to be established; at that time it consisted of just two rooms on Main Street between Market and Center Streets. In 1898–1900 a new storehouse and depot were built north along Woodward Avenue; this addition increased postal service to the community while also providing storage space for mail delivered into town by stagecoaches transporting goods upriver from Bangor or Portland.[2] In 1911–1912 several blocks northeast along Woodward Avenue between King Road and Welch Road were constructed as Municipal Park which remains today used primarily for agricultural purposes although some light retailing exists within walking distance adjacent to fire stations (once known as "The Gables").[3] By 1920 most businesses had moved out or closed due largely to prohibition – but life continued much as before with few changes save perhaps an increase in population over time due largely to annexation/incorporation by neighboring towns such as Auburn and Lewiston following World War II.[4][5][6][7] However many businesses have since reopened thanks in large part to Downtown Development Authority programs like Queen's Village which helped bring high quality restaurants back into downtown areas once deserted during Prohibition years while also creating jobs directly related thereto[8]. As recently as 2002 there still remained only one store open inside Municipal Park including cigarettes sold without nicotine addiction treatment under LDAP program operated by public health department concurrent with similar programs run by rival municipality Auburn having storefronts numerous miles away! The market square has seen similar redevelopment over time vacated residences have been replaced with modern buildings more consistent with current demographics outside city limits (although accessibility may still be inhibiting) overall making Biddeford feel quite different than any other small town I've experienced both hereabouts & elsewhere!

Biddeford is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,839 at the 2010 census. Biddeford is part of the Bangor-Auburn-Farmington, ME Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now Biddeford were Quakers who arrived in 1795 from Pennsylvania. A Presbyterian church and academy were built in 1802, and a post office was established there in 1815. Other early residents included several men who had emigrated to Maine as sharecroppers following the American Revolution. The town originally became known as "Beacon" because of a beaver dam on the Kenebec River that still stands today. The first store in Biddeford was opened by Obadiah Beardsley in 1827. By 1840, there were six stores and twelve sawmills operating in the town. In 1870, Fayette McKnight opened his first general store which would become one of the most important businesses in town for many years; it remains open today as McKnight's Place Shopping Center. In 1875, two brothers named John and George Hennepin founded the Journal Broadcasting Company which began broadcasting over shortwave radio from their farmhouse on Old Route 2 about two miles east of Biddeford into nearby townships such as Auburn and Farmington. This company would continue to operate until its closure in 1945; during its time, JBC aired a wide variety of programming including news reports from around the world (including broadcasts from World War II), talk shows, children's programs and music videos. During World War II, Biddeford played an important role as both a military airfield used by Boeing Airplanes for training pilots and bombardiers during aerial warfare operations over Japan (later renamed Okinawa) and also as an auxiliary base for naval activities off Japan’s coast; between 1941-1945 more than fifty aircraft operated out of BIDDEFORD including bombers such as Boeing 707s flown by USAAF personnel stationed at RAF Molesworth Airport near Norwich UK while Japanese warships conducted Operation Iwakuni which resulted in more than seventy confirmed kills by US forces against Japanese forces ashore including forty-six pilots killed aboard USS Shōkaku (DDG 51) when she attempted to impede this operation). In 1944 local citizens raised money through bake sales to help support Allied troops serving overseas with food rations unavailable locally due to wartime rationing; this effort ultimately failed but helped finance numerous local projects such as building new roadsides after heavy rains caused extensive flooding throughout much of Penobscot County during 1944/45 season In 1965 when Interstate 95 was extended through central Maine it ran concurrently through downtown Biddeford concurrent with US Route 191 leading northeastward out of town creating multiple intersections across downtown that are still extant today making it one of only two towns along I-95 within reachof both major highways within each country thus providing increased commerce opportunities for both cities . At night portions or all lights along I-95 will turn off completely leaving only small communities like Dunkirk without any conventional evening illumination bringing added challenges unique to small towns during these times .
