In 1811, Biddle donated land to establish a school where students could learn English and receive education before moving on to other opportunities in life. A post office was established in 1816 and became known as "Biddeford" due to its location within easy driving distance of major settlements in eastern Maine; this led to its nickname "The Town That Got Its Name From an Old Merchant." In 1838, Jonathan Sibley founded the Sibley Mill which continues to produce flour for local markets today. The mill disaster that struck the town on July 15th 1896 caused over $1 million worth of damage including loss of life when a disastrous fire destroyed most of the structure within minutes following an accident at the millrace; this event remains one of history's largest industrial disasters ever recorded. Biddeford is a town in Maine, United States. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Cumberland County. The first permanent settler in what would become Biddeford was John Purdy in 1795. At that time, the area now encompassing Biddeford and its immediate vicinity consisted of wilderness with few buildings or people. A post office called Biddeford was established in 1827, and remained in operation until 1907. The town took its name from the nearby Bidwell River which flows through it. In 1855, when Maine became a state, Biddeford became part of Cumberland County and adopted a new government under which it enjoyed greater autonomy than any other town within the county. This arrangement continued until 1959 when it reverted to its prior status as an unincorporated village within Cumberland County. In 1964, however, Biddeford voted to become an incorporated town once again; this change passed both the Village Council and voters statewide. Bidwell Farms were founded by Increase Bidwell in 1839 on land he had purchased from Robert Fitchcomb for $5 per acre (1¢ per pound). The farmstead stood on a hill overlooking Route 5 outside of present-day Biddeford proper but managed to remain operational for many years despite being surrounded by farming communities for miles around them; today only a faint footprint remains of the original farmhouse complex dating back to those early days – visible only if one looks carefully along US Route 5E between Bangor and Westbrook where there used to be several large outbuildings now demolished as part of development projects recently undertaken by both towns respectively
