Biddeford, Maine is a town of about 7,000 people in the central region of New England. Its history dates back to 1795 when it was founded as a small trading post on the Penobscot River. The town experienced growth during the 1800s as a result of its role in trade and the nearby fishing industry. In 1955, Biddeford became an incorporated municipality. Today, the town has a population of about 20,000 people and is home to many businesses and organizations related to its history and culture. During its early years, Biddeford was known for its military-themed clothing stores located on Main Street. These stores were used by local militiamen during World War I and II to provide morale booster items and clothing for troops stationed in the area. After the war ended, these stores disappeared but their legacy live on in other forms such as signage that still hangs around today at various establishments in Biddeford. In 1955, The Old Custom House was moved from its original location on North Main Street into what is now The Park plaza downtown where it remains today along with several other historical buildings including The Schoolhouse (1811), built by John Trumbull who donated land for it; The Masonic Lodge (1892); Agrarian Home (1902), which housed provisions for local farmers during WWI; Morehead Hall (1900), which housed Hellenic worship services until 1942; Andover Bank (1898), one of Maine’s first banks; First National Bank (1899) which merged with Bangor Banking Company two years later; Health Insurance Agency building completed in 1957 where insurance rates were first sold; Post office constructed 1911 near current day gymnasium while courthouse remained operational until 1862 In recent decades there have been efforts made to rehabilitate or reopen some of these historic buildings and storefronts throughout town However, due to financial reasons many have not yet reopened although they are still open for visitors to see/experience firsthand their former glory days. Both churches are part of the Evangelical Lutheran Churches USA network with headquarters located near Portland, Oregon. There is also a small Catholic church located just east of town along US Route 2 called Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Immaculate Conception-Biddeford which services about 25 people each month during Lent time only As one of only three communities within Penobscot County without any public schools other than homeschooling or private school options available through parents or children themselves Biddeforder also offers several volunteering opportunities including soup kitchens throughout Lent while also hosting numerous summer events such as arts festivals In recent years there has been talk about creating a new school district forbid because many residents who cannot afford private school fees still feel unable or unwilling to send their children there . Plans call for opening up space at Bethel Regional High School which would then house both public and homeschooled students together
