Biddeford, Maine is a small town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. It is the county seat of Penobscot County and has a population of 8,711 as of 2010. The town was first settled in 1824. One early settler was Eli Whitney. The town's name comes from Biddeford Point on the Penobscot River. In 1835, a group of Englishmen set up a trading post here and named it Biddeford Station after their leader, Sir John Ayscough Biddeford. The post was abandoned in 1837 because of robberies there by Indians. In 1875, the Bangor & Pacific Railroad built tracks through Biddeford and moved its depot here from Bangor, Maine. This made Biddeford an important railway center for eastern Maine and helped to spur economic development here. In 1916, when World War I started, the US military began building airfields in New England and ordered local companies to build fighter planes for use against German forces in Belgium and northern France. One factory owner responded by hiring two young men from Biddeford – Harry Pohlman and Al Williamson – to design his new plane – the Pohlman-Willliamson Fighter Plane (P-5A). After successful testing at the War Department's Dugway Proving Grounds near Salt Lake City Utah in 1917, these new airplanes were distributed among American units fighting on the Western Front over Christmas that year; they became known as "The Spruce Goose". From 1919 until 1923 (the height of prohibition), gunslingers from across North America came to shoot game at what is now called "Bidshot Hill" on Route 6 about east of downtown Biddeford where arrowheads dating back 5500 years are still visible today as well as ancient fishing gear used by Native Americans during this time periodSome believe that this area served as a stand for gunrunners during Prohibition As recently as 2009 there were still some people who live here who own firearms The Gun Store at 7 Main Street opened its doors on July 1st 1909 with 90 firearms including shotguns, rifles and pistols
