The economy of Biddeford depends primarily on agriculture and fishing; however, some businesses have moved into services such as health care or retailing while others continue to rely on agricultural production including haymaking, cattle raising, millinery manufacturing, cheese making and fruit trees.

Biddeford is a town in Maine, United States. The population was 6,853 at the 2010 census. Biddeford is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsborough, ME Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Biddeford was John Pike in 1785. He and his wife, Deborah, built a log cabin on the site of present day downtown Biddeford. The two were the first white people to live in what is now Biddeford Township. In 1824, John's son Jacob moved from Boston to start a fur trading post near modern day Soo Lake. This post operated until 1830 when it was burned down by Native Americans due to boundary issues with Canada. In 1832, Joshua Giffords established a sawmill at current day Forest Park on Timberline Road west of the town line. This mill became one of Maine's largest lumbering operations and continued operation until 1941 when it closed after being bought out by Deere & Co., Inc.. Today there are several small businesses that continue to use the mill buildings as office space or for storage purposes including: Aetna Life Insurance Company (1975-present), First National Bank (1914-1976), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (1964-1999), and Sears Roebuck & Co.'s original department store called Sears Department Store No 1 which opened on November 14th 1922 in what is currently known as corner of State Street and Elmira Avenue across from Businessman's Warehouse grocery store). Biddeford was platted on February 12th, 1835 by George Stephenson with lots located at Third and Federal Streets; both streets remain Town Streets today. The name "Biddeford" probably comes from an early settler named Bigge who purchased Lots 2 through 5 along Third Street from John Pike for $2 per acre[1]. On July 8th 1840 Samuel Morse submitted plans for a Telegraph Line between Bangor and New York City[2]. However this project never got off the ground because no money could be raised to build it.[3] In 1845 Isaac Brock set up a tannery in what is now Elmira Avenue south of Main Street[4]; this tannery continued production until 1906 when it closed due to competition from larger tanneries within town limits[5].
Biddeford, Maine was settled in 1795 by a group of Englishmen who named their community after the market town of Bishopsgate in London. The first permanent settler arrived in 1796 and built a trading post on the present-day site of the town. The first store was opened in 1801. By 1825, Biddeford had a population of over 100 people and two churches. A new courthouse was built in 1868 and replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire. In 1922, Biddeford became part of the newly created state of Maine.
