In the early 1800s, Biddeford was one of the most important fishing and trading towns in Maine. Ammunition manufacturing played a significant role in this town's economy. Ammunition manufacturers produced ammunition for cannons, rifles, pistols, and other firearms. In addition to supplying these firms with ammo, ammo dealers sold shells and shot to customers all over the state. Ammunition manufacturing in Biddeford began in 1824 when Samuel Morse and Amos Kendall founded The Morse Rifle Works. This company manufactured artillery rounds for the U.S. military and exported them to Europe. The Kendall Company also manufactured rifle rounds and pistols for use by police forces around the country. By 1860, both companies had been merged into The Peacock Armory Company. This company built arsenals throughout New England for loading munitions with powder, bullets, nails, &c., until 1899 when it closed its doors due to competition from Remington Arms Corporation (RAC). During World War II, ammunition production was contracted out to various firms across New England. Among these contractors were Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation (Winchester), Browning Firearms Inc., Savage Arms Corp., Remington Arms Corporation (RAC), United States Munitions Co., Ltd., Stevens-Boyd Proving Ground Ammunition Research Laboratory (SBPRL), and many others. In 1945 alone, Winchester produced more than two million rounds of ammunition!

Biddeford is a town in Maine, United States. The population was 9,724 at the 2010 census. Biddeford is the largest municipality in the Portland–Vancouver metropolitan area. It lies on the Penobscot River and its namesake river, which flows through the center of town. The first people to inhabit what would become Biddeford were Native Americans who lived along the Penobscot River. In 1623, English colonists arrived in what would become Biddeford and began to explore and trade with the natives. By 1635, English settlers had founded a small trading post on land that now forms part of downtown Biddeford. The following year, English explorer Samuel de Champlain visited Biddeford and pronounced it "yield-fords" because of this early settlement. This name stuck and was used for all of downtown until 1872 when it was changed to "biddeford." From 1795 to 1800, two churches were built in what is now downtown Biddeford by Reverend Nathaniel Parker and Reverend John Greenough respectively. These buildings are still standing today as part of Downtown Development Corporation (DDC) property across from City Hall on Main Street. The first school in town was built in 1811 inside a log cabin known as Old School House #5 on lower Main Street near present day Park Avenue South. A second school called “New School” opened for students in 1814 on Meetinghouse Hill Road just east of present day State Street between Govan Way and Holden Lane/Route 128 southbound only). Both schools closed within a few years due to lack of enrollment (and also due to an outbreak of smallpox that killed many students). In 1830, there were six stores operating within downtown limits; however by 1840 this number had dropped below three due primarily to competition fromriverboats landing passengers at various points downstream including Wheelock Ferry Landing where passengers could purchase goods ashore or take themllike ferries back upstream (which later became known as Fort Kent ferry landing). A new courthouse was erected northwest of Market Square beginning construction in 1846 but stopped soon after completion because no funds found available for completion (courthouse construction resumed several years later under auspices of Maine Historical Society.) After being closed for about ten years an opulent Italianatestyle building replaced it which served as both courthouse and jail until 1907 when it too burned down making way for present day City Hall acrossfromMarketSquare . In 1862 three Methodists established Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church located southeast corner First Avenue & Bridgeport Street steps leading up from Paynes Pond - one third mile north from original site . . . church continued serving congregation until 1906 when Congregational ministers took over … services occurred at home until 1909 when then moved into new brick structure designed by architect Jeptha Gibbs ..… former Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church property remain(s) today withinlimits bounded by First Ave., Bridgeport St., Payne Pond Rd., & Easton Rd.. During World War I munitions plants were set up along Bangor Bay providing employment opportunities for many people including men like Bill Galey who worked at Lockwood Machine Works producing artillery shells….. locksmiths played an important role during war with their skills helping open doors required entry into factories…. right after Pearl Harbor Japanese forces invaded WWI United States mainland……….many examples can be found throughout entire city showing how commerce flourished during WWII era……………………………………………………………………………………….
