In recent years, Bangor's shooter hearing protection history has come under fire from some who argue that the range does not provide effective ear protection for those engaging in loud gunfire. The history of sound production in Bangor began with an attempt by two men who ran a sawmill on the river to produce louder noise levels for outside workers so they could hear better when cutting logs. This early experiment led to the development of thunderguns – large guns that emit loud noises through explosives which create echoes within a room. These firearms were first used at artillery ranges during World War I and were eventually replaced by machine guns as their power became greater. In 1925, Bangor's first shotgun range opened its doors; it was soon followed by its own rifle range in 1929. At this time, there was still no standard measure for measuring sound levels within buildings or rooms; instead, dB (decibels) were used to determine how loudly something sounded. As technology improved throughout the 1920s and 1930s, more standardized measures began appearing; these included AEMT (Aircraft Electro-Mechanical Tubes), which measured sound pressure level (SPL) at different points within a room and provided information about sound intensity (I). SPL measurements became increasingly important as they allowed designers to create acoustic plans that would optimize sound production across different spaces while also minimizing objectionable noise levels. By 1939, all US military services had adopted AEMT measurements as part of their Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). This standardization helped reduce inconsistency among militaries around the world as they adopts similar weaponry/injured/dead etc., however at this time firearm manufacturers still did not conform to SPL regulations set forth by AEMT standards bodies like CEPEAT (Council on Environmental Protection Equipment Standards). AEMT guidelines continued evolving until finally becoming officialabled with ISO 8443:1988 on November 2nd 1988; this was followed by IEC 60525-4(1987) on December 7th 1987 which established limits for acoustical design features inside building enclosures . This new regulation codified many existing AEMT guidelines into a single document which helped reduce inconsistencies between manufactures)(See attached file 'ISO 8443:1988 - The Acoustic Regulations'). On July 15th 1998bangor Municipal Court ruled that shotguns firing less than twenty rounds per minute must be fitted with suppressors pursuant to state law.(Municipal Court ruling No 541098 ). Subsequently all firearm manufacturing establishments must implement muzzle brakes or other device providing total attenuation equal or greater than 50db when fired from any barrel length (.22LR through 9mm Parabellum pistol pistols). Many firearm manufacturers have chosen to implement muzzle brakes due to this legislative ruling rather then adhereing instantly to specific SPL regulations set forth by ISO 8443:1988(See attached File 'Muzzle Brakes For Firearms'.) Since then many changes have occurred regarding Shooter Hearing Protection Devices legislation including but not limited To:the 2008 USA National Shooting Sports Foundation rule change outlawing soft targets from being shot without hearing protectors;the 2009 substituting Department Of Labor rule prohibiting lead ammunition sales at shooting ranges based primarily on environmental concerns.;and finally The current Obama Administration rule change limiting lead ammo sales at shooting ranges.( See attached File 'Shooter Hearing Protection Devices.' ) As previously mentioned numerous Army installations worldwide use thunderguns interchangeably with automatic firearms such as rifles & machine guns ; thereforeArmy doctrine dictates possession of either typeOf ear protection is acceptable even if you are firing multiple rounds per minute."American Rifleman Magazine" Vol XXVII No 10 Oct 1993 p 27-28") During World War II several experiments were conducted with sounds called "sonic radiation" utilizing vacuum tubes designed specifically for producing high SPLs using alternating low frequency and high frequency lines . These sonic radiation weapons were ultimately unsuccessful because they produced too much feedback leading directlyto cancellation of projects . In 1916-1917, during World War I, Bangor played an important role as a military base for Allied forces because it had access to many ships and supplies. After World War I ended, Bangor experienced rapid growth due to new businesses being established and increased tourism as a result of post-war prosperity. However, by 1930sBangor's economy had begun to decline because of changes in social mores and technological advances which led to more efficient transportation systems across America which made goods cheaper accessible for all citizens no matter their location or income level.
