Bangor, Maine is a small town in the state of Maine. The population was 5,565 at the 2010 census. Bangor is located on the Penobscot River, about northeast of Portland and west of Boston. The first settlers in what is now Bangor were Quakers who arrived in 1776 from Pennsylvania. In 1802, a group of English farmers named Newell and Leach set up a trading post near present-day downtown Bangor. They became known as "the fathers of Bangor". The first store in what is now Bangor was established by John Davenport and his brother James on Washington Street in 1824. In 1862, following the American Civil War, Bangor became part of Lewiston County. Lewiston had been formed from parts of Cumberland County by order of President Abraham Lincoln during the war as a way to increase economic opportunities for northern soldiers and their families residing south of Mount Desert Island. In 1871, when Maine gained its own statehood, Bangor became part of that new state's Aroostook County scene despite being outside its borders entirely. In 1932, Aroostook County merged with Cumberland County to form Douglas County which still remains today one of the most populous counties in Maine. This merger created some problems for BangOR because although Douglas Counties extended into both sides of the Penobscot River they were considered separate entities even though they shared many common residents and institutions such as county courts and libraries. It wasn't until 1969 when Douglas County merged with Cumberland again to create Cumberland–Douglas County which still exists today as oneofMaine's most populous counties with over 10 million people living within its boundaries! This merger allowed for more residents to move into central or eastern portions of our state while preserving much cultural heritage including our rich historical diversity!
Bangor was first settled by the Menominee in 1812. In 1827, the town was renamed Bangor after General Andrew Jackson and it became a city in 1903. The city's current boundaries were established in 1908 when the town of Southport merged with Bangor.
