The club's history goes back to 1892 when a group of men who were interested in rifles tombstone marker restoration met at the old Masonic Hall on Market Street. They decided that they would need some help and so began their efforts. In 1912, the Bangor Rifle Club purchased its first rifle, an American Model 1871 Cavalry Carbine. In 1916, the club acquired a Russian-made Tula M-1 which served as their main arm for many years. The club also purchased two other rifles: an American Model 1903 Springfield Arsenal and an Austrian Rifles Schmiedeberg A3 model 1924 sniper rifle. Theclub also operated its own shooting range from 1922 until 1984. In 1951, the club moved to its current location on State Street near Old Navy Row and continues to meet monthly today.

On July 1, 1830, Auburn joined Portland Township; however, because Auburn had no landowning families who could provide financial support for official incorporation (as didPortland), it remained unincorporated until 1854 when it petitioned for incorporation under the name Albion Township. Incorporation occurred on November 3, 1854. The Town of Portland purchased land adjacent to what is now downtown Bangor from three brothers – James Wetherbee Sr., John Wetherbee Jr., and Isaac Wedgewood – for $2 per acre in 1865; this purchase helped makebangordowntownthelargest city in Eastern Maine before its annexation by Portland in 1898. During World War II, many citizens evacuated to Canada due to rationing problems; however, most residents returned home after the war ended. bangordowntown retains much of its wartime architecture including numerous buildings used by government agencies such as the Post Office and United States Coast Guard Station 2-Mile Bluff House which served as command center during Operation Neptune's Spear (1946).
