The town originally consisted only of small blocks clustered around Congregational Church and School; later blocks were annexation into larger communities throughout their history. During the American Revolution (1775-83), Bangor sided with Great Britain but soon reversed course after realizing that independence would be more difficult than they thought it would be. A large contingent of local militiamen helped fight against George Washington's Continental Army during the war; many residents also volunteered for service abroad or worked as fishermen or farmers while awaiting news from home about battlefronts elsewhere in North America. Aftermath of the war saw increasing industrialization in southern Maine; Bangor quickly emerged as one of its leading textile mills because its river water could produce high quality fabrics at low cost compared to nearby towns such as Portsmouth or Lewiston which did not have access to similar resources.
