The town grew quickly due to its location near the then-new steamboat landing on the Penobscot River. By 1830, Bangor had a population of over 100 people and it had its own post office. In 1838, Captain John Stevens married Anna Maria Gaylord and moved to Whatcom County, Washington. There he started a lumber company which became one of the largest logging companies in North America during the 19th century. Anna Maria Gaylord is credited with helping to promote Bangor as a major resources center for forestry in what is now Maine. After Captain Stevens' death in 1850, his son Edward took over his father's business interests and continued expanding production of lumber at what is now known as Gaylord Lumber Company headquarters on Government Street in Bangor until his retirement in 1907. This company has been responsible for much ofBangor's downtown development since its establishment more than 180 years ago.
