In 1847, Bangor had the first gunsmith in the United States. The man who did this was John Fenton and his shop was located on Mill Street. Bangor also became the capital of Maine in 1853. In that year, a bill was passed by the Maine Legislature making it an illegal to buy or possess any firearms without a license from a peace officer. This law applied to all citizens of Maine, not just those living in Bangor. Gun triggers were invented in Bangor in 1865 by George Dennison and John Purdy. The trigger mechanism consisted of three pieces: the sear, which caused the gun to fire; the hammer, which pulled the trigger; and the sear spring, which kept the hammer cocked when not being used. During World War I, people across America started buying rifles for military purposes because there wasn’t enough ammunition available for civilian firearms.
