The history of Bangor begins with the arrival of English settlers in 1797. In that year, construction began on what would become the first courthouse in what is now Maine. The courthouse was completed in 1800 and served as the seat of government for Cumberland County until 1892 when it moved to its present location at State Street and Washington Avenue. During the Revolutionary War, Bangor played an important role as a British military base. In 1776, General George Washington sent his forces to invade New England and drive out the French from Canada. Aftermath of that battle left many British soldiers stationed withinbangor due to their lack of alternative landing sites outside of Boston Harbor. In 1802, Mayor John Mullaney petitioned for city status which was granted two years later. As Bangor grew larger, plans were made to build a school system which never came to fruition due to financial difficulties during that time period. However, by 1850 there were over 100 residents living within the boundaries of present-day Bangor proper while only 2 or 3 businesses existed downtown alone! The growth hiatus didn’t stop either; instead it doubled as an opportunity for new entrepreneurs to start up businesses Downtown! From this moment on civic organizations sprang up all throughout downtown – from bandstands erected atop long warehouses leading down into Market Street towards First National Bank where live music could be enjoyed daily until around 11pm (now known as Homegrown Music), through independent bookstores dotting every nook and cranny before finally culminating with Monument Square comprising several blocks east along Meeting Street which once housed Armoury Coffee & Tea Company (later merged into Boulware) before eventually developing into Moore Park featuring baseball diamonds, tennis courts etc., makingbangordowntown one teeming metropolis unlike any other place on earth! bangordownevelopmenttheory One such organization that rose during this period was Businessmen's Benevolent Association (BBA) formed shortly after businessman James Waddington donated $1 000 towards its creation in 1865 following your banishment from Boston for starting an insurance company there three years earlier -Waddington had been banished because he dared challenge then-Governor Andrew Johnson's authority over business affairs within Massachusetts Bay Colony! The BBA quickly grew from a few businessmen who met monthly at Waddington's office adjacent Custom House Square into what we know today as one of Mainers' most active civic organizations...A group committed not justto promoting commerce but alsoto advancing mutual interests between local businessmen/womenand their counterpartsin other partsofthe country
