The Bangor Rifle and Pistol Company was organized on October 20, 1852 by Captain David D. Healey. The company was originally called the "Bangor Rifle and Pistol Brigade." The regiment served at Gettysburg from July 1-3, 1863 as part of Brigadier General Samuel J. Buel's 2nd Brigade in General George E. McClellan's army of Northern Virginia. The regiment fought at Monmouth County Court House on July 8, 1863; Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862; Second Bull Run on November 7, 1861; First Bull Run on February 13, 1865; and Petersburg on April 6-8, 1865. It mustered out of service at Petersburg on May 9th 1865 with a total of 527 men including officers and enlisted men. On August 16th 1876 Captain John Garton reorganized the Bangor Rifle & Pistol Company into a rifle battalion (unit number 10) under the command of Lieutenant Colonel George Fenton with headquarters at Fort Donelson Tennessee until ordered to return home due to military engagements in Mexico City during that year's Tonkin Gulf War
