Bangor is a town in southern Maine, United States. The population was 12,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bangor-Lewiston-Auburn, ME Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Bangor were French Canadian Canadiens who arrived in 1795. They were followed by English traders and Loyalists who had been driven out of Nova Scotia by the British in 1813. A fort was built on what is now Main Street in 1799 and named Fort George after King George III of Great Britain. In 1821, Bangor became a port for shipping goods from New England to Quebec City. In 1828, Bangor became an agricultural center with the arrival of General James Monmouth (1786-1850) as governor of Maine Territory. He designated it as the site for a major military installation called Lewiston Castle which would become home to the Maine State Militia from 1830 until its abolition in 1892. The town’s growth came about due to its location on the Penobscot River and its access to timber and other resources that helped drive economic development throughout much of Maine during this period. The railroad arrived in 1865 and led to increased transportation needs that require more land for development so farmers could build homes and businesses near their crops while also providing jobs for workers living nearby. The late 1800s saw a rapid expansion of white collar employment opportunities as new technologies such as photography, film production, radio broadcasting, and electric power created new opportunities for people across all social strata in America – including those living near large metropolitan areas such as Boston or New York City – while maintaining some rural subsistence lifestyles through animal husbandry, fishing, mining operations, and wood-frame houses made from logs with shingles covering them (a type called “bungalow style” architecture). During this time period too many small towns within reach of larger cities lost their importance as manufacturing centers because these activities moved away to locations like Detroit or Buffalo when technological advancements made those cities more efficient at producing goods than their smaller counterparts could manage on their own behalf; however Bangor continued to thrive thanks largely to its advantageous location on Penobscot River which provided quick access both upstream and downstream for industryaughlin endeavors such as lumber milling/logging/shipbuilding/, whaling/fishing/, agriculture/factorization/, engineering services/, retail trade (), ferry service (), cargo handling (),and tourism (). By 1920 there were over 20 factories operating here employing over 1200 workers making Bangor one of America’s largest industrial communities by that point! This prosperity led some residents during this time period to begin thinking nostalgically about simpler days when they could go out into the community where they shopped at local stores or dined at local restaurants without having to leave their homes long distances away; however today most residents still enjoy easy access both upstream (~Newmarket), downriver (~Milford Haven), and out side (~Portland) depending on prevailing winds direction
Bangor was founded in 1764 by John Bangor and his wife Rebecca. In 1837, it became the capital of Maine. The city was renamed Portland in 1875 and then Bangor in 1907.
