In 1802, Abraham Lincoln visited Bangor while on his way downriver to be inaugurated as President of the United States; during his stop in town, he stayed at Bowdoin College and met several local merchants who afforded him lodgings for two nights while they prepared their goods for shipment upriver the next day. After years of debate over whether or not to make it a city – with various proposals including annexing nearby Thompsons Falls – Bangor was designated as such on December 12, 1907 by Mayor Averill Peck (1851–1921). At that time it had a population of 1,500 residents; however by 1910 its population had grown to 11,[4] due largely to waves of immigration from Europe along with increased manufacturing activity related to World War I production innovations like airplane wings made from aircraft fabric instead of wood
