In 1814, Bangor became the first city in New England to be established when it amalgamated with neighboring Auburn to form a new municipality under the name of “Bangor and Auburn”. The city's fortunes declined after World War II but slowly started to rebound following several economic revitalization projects spearheaded by then-Mayor Harry Chandler. These projects included installation of new streetlights and improvements to water systems as well as creating new housing developments such as The Lakeside Park development which caters primarily to professionals and their families. Since 2003, Mayor Dave Bing has been responsible for continuing these revitalization efforts through initiatives such as downtown growth initiative and creation of The Arts District which includes several galleries and restaurants along State Street between High Street and Portland Avenue). Despite some challenges posed by recent natural disasters (such as Hurricane Charley), Bangor has continued to experience significant growth over the past few years due largely to its strong community spirit which continues to fueling local businesses throughout the cityscape.
