The first post office in Bangor opened on October 15, 1814, and was known as "New Portland". It was renamed "Bangor" on November 1, 1835, after General John Purdum's victory at Battle of Bladensburg over American forces under George Washington. In 1847, Bangor became part of the newly created state of Maine and received its own government with a mayor and six council members. In 1893, it lost its autonomy when it merged with neighboring townships to become one large municipality. On December 5, 1959, residents voted to secede from Maine and join Canada due to various social issues such as high taxes and lack of political representation for minorities. On January 1, 1960, all citizens of Bangor were required to re-register with the new Canadian government because they no longer had municipal rights within their old municipality

Bangor, Maine is a town located in Cumberland County, Maine. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. Bangor is part of the Portland-Biddeford, Maine Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Bangor Micropolitan Statistical Area had a population of 11,471 in 2000. The first permanent settlers in what is now Bangor were three brothers from Dorset, England who arrived on the USS John C. Stevens on July 16, 1824 and named their new town after General George Washington's victory at Yorktown two years earlier. They stayed for only two years before returning to England full of technical supplies and equipment that they had brought with them from America. In 1828, another group of Englishmen settled around the bend in what is now downtown Bangor and named their community "New Bedford." This settlement lasted until 1830 when they all left because of economic troubles caused by low prices for agricultural goods exported to Europe from America during the Panic of 1837. In 1841 an Irishman named Daniel Crowley bought land along the river where he built his home called "Crowley's Cliffs" which still stands today as a private residence within walking distance of downtown Bangor. In 1863 he donated his entire estate (including land across the river) tobangor public school district which became known as Crowley's School District after him. This donation increased enrollment at city schools so much that by 1870 it was decided that all students must attend school in one location whether they lived nearby or not and this system remains in place to this day; morning and afternoon classes are held at City Hall Annex every day except Mondays when class meets inside Crowley's School District offices located off State Street). A fire destroyed most of Cleveland Heights east of downtown on November 8th 1913 but reopened on December 3rd with just 10 students attending due to an absence by one teacher due to pneumonia pandemic then raging throughout eastern North America; many businesses closed because no one could afford insurance during those days! In 1915 there was also a referendum asking if citizens wanted annexation into Portland but it lost by nearly 2-to-1 margin meaning that instead Bangor became part of Portland proper rather than continue under separate government rules while its citizens continued to vote separately on issues such as local taxes and fire protection ordinances (which they continue to do even today). During World War I Boston businessman Wm Henson donated $10,000 towards building a airfield adjacent to existing Wright Field northeast of town which served as training ground for both American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) and RAF fighter pilots during World War I; eventually becoming known as Henson Airfield starting in 1917 when Ulysses S Grant visited Bangor for military exercises purposes only to find out about Wright Field & its potential use! After World War IIBangor experienced rapid growth thanks largely to skilled labor imported from Canada through bilateral trade agreements fostered by president Franklin D Roosevelt’s New Deal policies including enlargement/renaming Of United States Air Force Base(USAFB) – later renamed Elmendorf AFB – providing jobs for locals once again leading directly to housing development especially around Elmendorf Boulevard & Youngs Road beginning c1970’s followed by innumerous restaurants & bars following thru present day boom era!
