On July 1st 1865, Maine became one of five states admitted to the Union along with New York City; Bangor served as its state capital until 1886 when it moved back toPortland. On November 12th 1898 a fire destroyed most of downtown Bangor including many buildings dating back to before 1800; this event is also known as "the Great Fire." It took over 10 years for reconstruction efforts which included erecting new buildings on landfill above ground level and adding an underground system capable of holding water for emergency fires while still allowing access to upper floors for operations
