In 1892, the Augusta Manufacturing Company began producing target holders in Augusta, Maine. The company was founded by W.E. Starbuck and J.B. Neuman and produced target holders until 1923 when it merged with the National Sporting Goods Company to form National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF).
Augusta, Maine is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 4,193 at the 2010 census. It lies on the south side of the Sacandaga River. Augusta is part of the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford, ME Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Augusta were French traders and missionaries in 1609–10. The town site was chosen because it had good water access and no hills that could hold back the river's current. The name "AUGUSTA" (pronounced ah-gwahtuh) meaning "august(er)", was given to the town by John Winthrop in 1629 while he was governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1827, Samuel Morse built a sawmill on what is now Main Street. Morse also founded The Republican Gazette newspaper which served as the town's official paper from its beginning until1872 when it became The Daily News under ownership of Julius Caesar Hearst Jr.. In 1862, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor resulting in over 600 fatalities including many of Augusta's residents who helped defend the fortification against Forrest's attack. Many men from nearby towns joined forces with their local counterparts to fight for South Carolina throughout Sherman's march through Georgia & Alabama toward Richmond bringing an end to slavery within America When American troops arrived at Savannah, Georgia they found ammunition waiting for them but no food or munitions so they marched into downtown Savannah whereupon they discovered cannons mounted on buildings along Constitution Avenue They siegeed this until units from other regiments arrived and relieved them before withdrawing back towards Savannah without firing a shot

Augusta's history began with its founding in 1795 by Congregationalists who became known as the "Fathers of Augusta." However, since the late 1990s there has been significant decline in economic activity in Augusta due to competition from larger towns nearby. In 2000, developers proposed building a shopping mall in downtown Augusta but were met with resistance from residents who felt that their neighborhoods would be destroyed if it were built. In September 2006, plans were announced for development of an approximately 400-acre (160-km2) park located east of downtown that would include ballfields, hiking trails, restaurants and other business ventures. The project received community opposition because it would impact several thousand acres (800 km2) of natural open space within city limits
