From here they developed a trading post and Indian trade with Native Americans In 1785, George Washington chartered a company to build a road between Boston and Montreal so that goods could be brought southward from Canada for sale in America. This company was known as the "George Washington Road Company". The first sod for the road was laid by Captain John Mason on February 25th, 1786. In 1801-1802 an Act of Congress authorized $10,000 for improvements along the new route from Boston to Portland. These included building bridges over several rivers including the Kennebec and Androscoggin A year later General Winfield Scott ordered construction of Fort Scott across the river on land donated by Sir William Howe which had been confiscated from Massachusetts after her victory at Bunker Hill during the American Revolution Fort Scott was completed in 1804 and served as military headquarters for much of Maine until its closure in 1907 due to damage done by Hurricane Andrew After Fort Scott’s closure most of its materials were used to rebuild New York City’s Brooklyn Bridge which opened in 1912 During World War II Augusta became an important munitions production center because it produced ballistics shells for both Allied forces fighting Nazi Germany (1939-1945) as well as Japan (1941-1945). In 1945 all munitions production stopped except for some artillery shells still stored at Fort Scott . It should be noted that no human lives were lost during this time period

During World War I, Augusta played an important role as an airfield for Confederate forces during the Battle of Bunker Hill. After the war ended, many businesses were closed due to economic recession and social unrest that followed throughout much of America during this time period known as The Great Depression. In 1937, Augusta experienced its first major fire when some hogs burned down several buildings in downtown area resulting in $5 million damage to business infrastructure; however this did not cause any long-term structural problems within Augusta's core community which continued until well into the 21st century
