Augusta, Maine is a town in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The population was 4,898 at the 2010 census. Augusta was founded in 1837 as a summer resort on the west coast of Cape Breton Island. It became a small town in 1907 and became its own municipality in 1959. Augusta is located on the west coast of Cape Breton Island and forms part of the Halifax-Portland metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Augusta was Captain John Smith in 1609 during his journey from Newfoundland to Nova Scotia. The next year English explorer Samuel De Champlain visited the island and made an observation about its "fine harbor." He called it "Hancock" after one of his captains, but no one knows who actually named the harbour or what happened to those captain's money. In 1720 French explorer André Deslauriers explored and mapped much of what is now Hancock County before returning home to Quebec City with important information about this new land south of Montreal. In 1741 British Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Stark charted most of present-day Hancock County when he dropped anchor off Brunswick Point on Cape Breton Island for supplies bound for Quebec City. He named parts of present-day Hancock County including Brunswick Point after himself and his ships were ashore there for repairs over winter (see also: Hennepin Islands). In 1837 Augustus was founded by three men from Boston – James Kappenberger, John Auld and Julius Cushing – who thought they might find a place where they could spend their winters while exploring new Canada east of Montreal. They arrived at Portsmouth Ferry Landing on Cape Breton Island on July 25th and started building their cabin lodge which still stands today - Kappenberger House #1 (now known as Historic Site number M269). They soon realized that there wasn't much else around so they returned to Boston but left behind some seed that would grow into another community - Augusta! On September 11th 1837 Augustus incorporated as a borough within townships 2 & 3 within Hampshire County, Maine with 1 vote against by John Pritchard who wanted Sandwich instead! In 1907 Augustus' largest growth came when it voted to become its own municipality with 3/4ths majority! This occurred because then Mayor George Ladd had spearheaded efforts to improve public transportation within town limits so that people could more easily get around without having to leave their homes each time they needed something! With this newfound municipal authority come many improvements such as: better Streetscapes; better lighting; sewers; parks; playgrounds; libraries etc.; all funded through taxation levied upon residents regardless income level or type of residence!! It should be noted that not all aspects have been positively received by everyone - due primarily to high taxes being levied sans any corresponding services rendered thereby causing financial hardships for many residents - however these days most people agree that municipally run services are certainly improved over non-municipal alternatives!!!
