Augusta, Maine is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Augusta is located on the southern shore of Penobscot Bay and includes the towns of Easton and North Augusta. The town was named for General George Washington's daughter-in-law, Augustus Cushing. The first permanent settler in what is now Augusta was Captain John Smith who landed on an unknown location in 1768. He named his landing place "Smith's Harbor" after his friend and neighbor John Smith from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. In 1812, Colonel Nathaniel Hawthorne set up a home here with his wife Sophia Hawthorne as part of a plan to settle newly purchased land in what is now eastern Maine. Hawthorne had been married to Maria Cosgrove when he met her while serving with the 2nd Dragoons during the War of 1812 at Limehouse Point on Cape Trafalgar near Bostonport. She was a runaway slave owned by Alexander Cosgrove and she had run away from her masters to join him at Limehouse Point when she was about 12 years old. When Hawthorne learned about her fate he decided to buy her back from her master - something that would not have been possible if she had continued to be enslaved because it would have violated British law prohibiting slavery within British territory At this time there were no schools for slaves in America soHawthorne set about creating one himself using funds he borrowed from friends and family members until he could raise enough money through sponsorship from free people of color across Massachusetts In 1820 he completed construction of Theophilus Spelman House which served as their headquarters until they moved into their present headquarters building on Park Road in 1830 They also built two churches: First Baptist Church (1820) and Second Baptist Church (1830). Governor Jonathan Atherton sold some property adjacent to where Bangornowie Plantation later stood for use as Augusta Village in 1824 but all development stopped due to lack of support from local residents who did not want new housing developments emerging right near their homes Businesses such as grocery stores, hotels and taverns started popping up all around town by 1830 due largely to increased demand by sailors docking at Bangorport for repairs or supplies Shipbuilding also became prominent beginning around 1800 with the establishment of Brunswick Naval Shipyard which produced USS Constitution (1797) USS Rodney (1805), USS Perry (1809), USS Preble (1825) among others Notable events associated with Augusta include: Augusta Falls – On October 28th 1861 Confederate Major General Robert Ewell unsuccessfully descended 16 feet below Weymouth Harbour Bridge over river Superior towards Portland Landing intending only as diversionary attack against Union forces under Ulysses S Grant rather than actually invading Maine Augustan Fairs – These annual festivities commemorate various aspects of life within the community such as agriculture, manufacturing & trade
