When war came to America in 1861, captain Williams sided with Confederate forces and fled northward into Canada with his family – all but four members of his household including wife Peggy (née Pease). After taking refuge at Fort Niagara on Lake Ontario for several weeks they finally arrived safe enough in Augusta where they set about establishing themselves among local settlers who were eager to welcome them into their community What followed over time would be one of the most dramatic changes ever seen within Augusta – from being an outpost only accessible through arduous travel downriver to becoming one of Americas largest cities with over two million residents by 1865 when it absorbed part of neighboring Sheffield borough During prohibition period (1908- 1933), much activity took place within Augustus which included bootlegging operations along Penobscot River until 1917 when law enforcement officials shut down these activities following raids conducted jointly by Portland police officers under auspices of newly formed State Liquor Authority In 1933 however alcohol prohibition ended altogether in Maine after protracted efforts by both political entities – local government being determined not to become involved while state government advocated more comprehensive controls Following World War II economic prosperity ensued throughout Great Britain which causedrising demand for labor throughout North America resulting in increased job opportunities for locals fuelling overall growth .
