Smith's landing site is now known as Devil's Harbor due to its proximity to that spot on the river. However, by 1910, Augusta had a proud history that includes being the home of the first post office in Maine and the birthplace of both Julia Child and Alice B. Toklas. The town also played a significant role in helping shape America as we know it today. The town was originally called Newburyport because it was located on the old route between Boston and Montreal. After British General John Burgoyne surrendered at Saratoga in 1777, his forces moved south into what is now New England and renamed their new settlement after King George III’s daughter Augusta (the wife of Prince Frederick). In 1802, when Congress created Maine as an independent country, they chose Augusta as its capital because it was an important trading center for logging and shipping along the Kennebec River. The town continued to grow throughout its early years due to its proximity to resources such as lumber and fishing grounds – along with its easy access to railroads. In 1860, when Augusta became a city after being annexed by Portland from nearby Lewiston, it still held a small population of just over 100 people. However, within only five years of incorporation, Augusta had grown significantly thanks to two factors: its location on the main road connecting Boston and Montreal; as well as its importance as headquarters for several businesses including mills found around downtown today (remnants of which can be seen lining Main Street). In 1876-77, during Reconstruction following America’s collapse into civil war following Abraham Lincoln’s election victory over Andrew Johnson – many new residents came through town looking for work opportunities during peacetime while seeking revenge against Confederate troops who had invaded their homes two years earlier. This growth led to increased infrastructure needs such as City Hall (which currently houses materials used inside city government), water supplies and public schools which were built on land donated by local farmers or purchased from private owners at cheap prices. Despite this constant growth throughout much of our 20th century – including some hard times – there has never been any major flooding or damage caused by Storm Desmond which made landfall in Maine on October 10th 1914 . This event left more than $10 million dollars worth of damage across eight counties across central Maine . Despite this devastation however – which included power outages lasting days/ weeks – locals continue to celebrate every anniversary of Storm Desmond in order to promote tourism within their community
Augusta was founded in 1692 by George Washington and his men. In 1785, it became a stop on the Great Northern Railway. The town went through many changes during its history, including becoming a borough in 1854 and then city in 1898.
