The first settlers in what is now Augusta were men from England who came over on the Mayflower in 1620. They built a fort here and named it after their home country, England. In 1802, Augustus became a city and was renamed after George Washington. In 1865, when Maine seceded from United States of America, Augusta became part of Canada. After Confederation, it continued to be known as Augustus until 1973 when it reverted to its original name of Augusta. Today there are several businesses in town that are responsible for most of the economic activity within the community including two banks and three grocery stores as well as four restaurants and two bars general stores which together employ around 100 people full-time or more part-time. There are also several churches which provide services to many residents in addition to various recreational activities such as soccer and golfing opportunities available for all ages participate annually in both summer festivals as well as during winter break time between December through February according to local news reportage

In recent years there has been discussion about annexing part or all of neighboring Cumberland County which includes Brunswick and Woodstock townships as well as parts of Lebanon Township in east-central Maine due to concerns about affordable housing and transportation options in that area.
