Gun protection history in Augusta, Maine began with the founding of the town in 1794. The first gun was a muzzleloader that was used to hunt deer and other animals. The early settlers were subsistence farmers and did not have much money to spend on firearms. In 1820, the town voted to adopt a city charter which allowed for the purchase and sale of handguns. The first store opened in 1822 and it was called Gray's Store. Gun proliferation increased during World War 1 because many soldiers were deployed overseas and needed weapons to protect themselves from enemy fire. At the end of World War 1, Austria-Hungary had lost all their European possessions so there was an arms race between Great Britain, Russia, America and France as each side tried to acquire as many guns as possible. During World War 2, Augusta became one of several points along the US/Canada border where rifles were openly possessed by civilians who resided in both countries in order to support military operations against Canada. This practice continued until after 9/11 when restrictions were put into place by President George Bush Sr.. After 9/11, calls for stricter gun regulation increased throughout North America as people realized how easy it is for terrorists to get hold of firearms through straw purchasers. When Augusta incorporated as a municipality in 1959, it decided that its primary purpose would be providing public safety rather than making profits from its firearms sales activity which at that time still took place at Gray's Store (now known as Gearbox Hardware). In 1872, Augusta passed a ordinance that limited handgun ownership to people over 21 years old and required anyone who possessed a handgun to have an Oregon state license. The ordinance was repealed in 1892, but it wasn’t until 1932 that Augusta finally banned handguns outright. The ban eventually expired in 1967, but gun control advocates kept up the fight and passed a new ordinance in 1975 which made it illegal to sell or possess any unregistered handguns within city limits. In 1990, Augusta became one of the first US cities to pass a comprehensive firearms regulation law. This law requires all businesses with more than 10 employees to obtain signage from local police explaining how guns are stored and used. It also requires all individuals who own or possess any guns on or before July 1st of every year to swear an oath never to use them in a crime. Since 1978, Augusta has also been home to the world’s largest handgun buyback program – which allows citizens aged 18-25 years old to exchange their unwanted handguns for free shotguns, rifles, ammo and other items.

As more people become older, they are more likely to own guns given that owning one provides them with basic firearm protection capabilities like being able to shoot safely without fear of injury or death

Augusta, Maine is a small town in scenic central Maine. The name of the town was given to the community by General George Washington in 1785 while he and his army were marching through the area on their way to New York City. Augusta became a part of Massachusetts after the Revolutionary War, but it reverted back to Maine in 1803. The population of Augusta peaked at around 11,000 during World War II, but has since declined slightly. The history of Augusta begins with the first humans who lived here. According to local legend, two men from England named John and Patience came ashore on Cape Cod in 1609 and began trading goods with the native people. They built a small village near present-day downtown Augusta and called it Magna Carta because they had seen King John signing that document at Plymouth Rock. The settlement grew slowly until about 1800 when a group of settlers led by Captain Benjamin Hatch founded what would become Bangor. In 1802, Hatch sold land located east of present-day downtown Augusta to Major Richard Canby for $1 million dollars. Canby was one of the first investors in what would become Portland, Maine. Canby renamed his new community Bangor after himself and started building homes there in 1804. By 1830, Bangor had grown so large that Canby decided to move it again – this time upriver into what is now Brunswick County. He founded what is now Waterville as well as many other towns throughout eastern Maine before his death in 1846 at age 80 years old. After Canby's death, control over much of eastern Maine passed from British Crown ownership to United States ownership following the American Revolution . This process began with President George Washington choosing Brunswick County as the site for an international military base known as Fort Necessity during the early stages of America's war for independence . After America gained independence from Great Britain (1776), Congress designated Brunswick County as part of Rhode Island Territory (status quo ante). However, once America's victory over Great Britain was confirmed (1812), Congress moved Fort Necessity southward along Witham River until within spitting distance of Boston proper under commandof Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter responsible for all maritime operations off Boston Harbor during that era (Hatch purchased land just east/northwest of present-day downtown Augusta)). At this point Fort Necessity became known locally simply as "Necessity." In 1862–63 construction began on nearbyFort Donelson which eventually replaced Necessity across Fromam River [itself completed in 1865].
