Hiller after his death from fever at the hands of Indians near present day Sayre Schoolhouse. augusta's growth began with the arrival of two steamboats from Boston in 1868 which brought commerce to town for the first time since before the American Revolution. By 1889 there were ten businesses active in town including five hotels, three stores, four sawmills and several farms; one fifth of all business operations took place within 15 blocks of where people lived or worked. In 1912 Augusta had a school annex that housed grades kindergarten through 8th grade as well as an adult education wing known as “The Girls’ School Annex” which served students until 1978 when it closed because enrollments went up so much faster than budgeted and state funding could keep pace; however parts of annex still serve today (eastern end currently houses old home & garage conversion project) as Girl Scout Troop 519 meetings are held there each year during summer camp season! After years of decline due to lack of government investment & development along with natural disasters such as Hurricane Agnes (2000), tornado damage sustained by wind turbines being erected right next to downtown augusta made it all stop again until recession hit and dollars started flowing back into city coffers! After years more work has been done downtown including new sidewalks/patios/gutters etcetera this once struggling community finally has hope for another renaissance thanks to some private donations starting last year under auspices of Downtown Improvement District! As we enter our 4th decade many things have changed but many memories will stay always connected to our wonderful hometown called Augusta!
