The company made barrels for guns such as the rifle and shotguns. The name of the company is still used to this day, although it no longer makes firearms. The origins of gun barrels can be traced back to 1665 when a group of Dutch immigrants came to Augusta and started a mill. One of their goals was to improve the quality of flour that they exported from South America. They also began making barrels for cannons and rifles. By 1827, these businesses were combined into one organization called The Gun Barrel Company. This company made barrels in many different sizes and shapes including octagon,smoothbore,squarehead,and Beowulf calibers. Many famous firearms were made with these barrel styles including the Battle Rifle (1876), .577 Casull (1903), .450 Holland & Holland (1892), and .45 Colt (1911). The Gun Barrel Company continued to makeguns until 1921 when it merged into Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation (WSC). WSC continues to produce GUNS today!

Augusta, Maine is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 711 at the 2010 census. Augusta is the seat of Penobscot County. It was founded by settlers from England in 1799 and named for Princess Augusta of Hesse-Darmstadt. The first post office in Augusta was established on May 15, 1807, and served until December 1, 1814. The town became a borough on January 1, 1889. The city of Augusta was incorporated as a separate town on November 4, 1911. On February 10, 1935, the city merged with the Town of Penobscot to form the current municipality of Augusta. In 1917 local resident Colonel George Armstrong Custer killed three American Indians near Mount Desert Island during what later became known as "Custer's Charge". Custer's remains were brought back to Augusta and interred at Belle Isle Cemetery before being reburied at Pine Hill Cemetery in Bangor. In 1936 local resident Willard Waugh donated his home on Prospect Street to become known as the "Waugh House" in honor of his ancestor General Francis Jauncey Waugh who had commanded British forces during World War I and also served as mayor of Ottawa Township (now Westford). In 1947 local resident Earle Averill Coolidge donated land east of downtown to become known as "Coolidge Park". On July 30th 1984 local resident Herbert Halsey announced plans to construct a new shopping mall adjacent to Central High School which would include over 100 stores including Sears & Roebuck
