These trips brought people and goods overland from Boston through what is now Penobscot County but also across into Whatcom County where they sold their products at marketplaces such as Mount Auburn or North Street near present-day Bangor. In 1847, Augustus Tilton built his first home on public land east of downtown for himself and his family with money he had won working as a printer's devil on Longfellow's "Frosty Autumn" Expedition during the winter of 1840/41. By 1850 Tilton had expanded his business into operation of three stores selling various items including groceries, hardware, liquors etc., hiring help to run these stores himself while continuing to manage his own farm which he farmed until 1911 when it passed into private hands In 1865 an act was passed authorizing a Methodist church be built on land donated by Reverend Joice Hogg adjacent to business locations currently occupied by Waffle House & Grits restaurant chain (& adjoining Congregational Meeting House). This new church served both Augusta and neighboring Westbrook until it burned down in 1922 after being damaged by fire caused by lightning while open for services A new Methodist Church was completed just east of downtown (now part of Main Street) in 1925 with additions including a gymnasium and social hall later converted into residential housing . Finally within limits imposed upon municipal growth following World War II – due primarily to shortageszoning materials – two more small shopping malls were developed: one north along US-1 (originally called "The Mall" after developer Dillingham Phinney’s supermarket chain) between Congregational Meeting house & First Baptist Church corner; another south along US-2 between Third Baptist Church & First National Bank building corner . These too failed commercially but resulted in increased visitation rates for local historical sites such as those at Congregational Meetinghouse which continue today as part of Appalachian Folklife Museum Due largely to declining agricultural production around Penobscot Valley beginning around 1940 (primarily due to changes wrought during WWII), most businesses closed up shop or moved out altogether throughout much of what is now Penobscot County save for one General Hardware Store still open withinPenobscot Valley boundaries today known locally simply as "Homer's".
