Augusta's history can be traced back to 1795 whenCaptain John Young and his men founded Augusta on an island in the Monhegan River. In 1820, Captain John Young's grandson, Captain Samuel Young, donated land to make up what is now the downtown core of Augusta. The city was built on this land between 1835 and 1840 and named for General James K. Polk who served as governor of Maine from 1845-1849. The first post office in Augusta was established in 1837. The current post office building was completed in 1912 and stands on Main Street across from the courthouse which has been remodeled several times since its construction. In 1898, Colonel George Washington Marshall purchased some land northwest of downtown for $1,000 and began to build a home which would become known as Marshall House; it still stands today within walking distance of downtown Athens (the original name for downtown). In 1903, General Electric opened their new plant east of downtown Athens on State Street and soon after developed other businesses around it including a paint factory which produced military vehicles during World War I and later became part of Brunswick Chemical Corporation before being sold to JBC Companies Incorporated in 1987 who renamed it JBC Tyco International plc.. In 2000-2001 local residents voted to annex nearly all of rural Hancock County into the city limits making Augusta one municipality with a population over 10k citizens instead of two separate municipalities with populations under 7k each. This annexation made possible by then Mayor Pete Adams' efforts to gain support from both sides of politics for plans that would include larger sidewalks and wider streetscapes throughout town while also increasing funding available from the state government through Tax Increment Financing Act sourcesodder money earmarked specifically for infrastructure projects rather than general fund applications such as development outside existing urban areas where taxes were already higher than those levied within city boundaries) See: "Maine Municipal Elections 2001" On July 1st 2002 voters approved an ordinance designating September 15th as “National HIV/AIDS Prevention Day” It will be celebrated annually at City Hall on or around that date
Augusta, Maine is a small town located in Penobscot County, Maine. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Augusta was originally called "Waterville" and changed its name to Augusta in 1819 after General James Wilkinson's victory over the French at Quebec City. The first permanent settlers of Augusta were three men from Waterville who arrived on July 5, 1795. They named their new community for George Washington, the first U.S. President and hero of the Revolutionary War. The town's initial growth was slow due to lack of transportation and access to water supplies. However, with the opening of the railroads in 1830, Augusta began to grow rapidly. By 1840, it had a population of 1,500 people and by 1850 it had reached 2,000 people. During this time period, Augusta became known as one of the most important towns in Maine because it housed both federal government employees and business leaders such as Alexander Graham Bell and Ezra Taft Benson. In 1868–69, during Reconstruction following the Civil Rights Movement in America, Augustus voted against secession from America because he felt that African Americans should be treated equally under law no matter where they lived in America. This vote helped solidify his reputation as an independent-minded man during this time period. In 1901–02 when Augustus served as Mayor of Augusta alongside future Governor Angus King he became only the second mayor in history to serve two terms consecutively without interruption (the other being Boston Mayor John Ference). A severe storm struck on October 16th 1902 which caused extensive damage throughout downtown Atlanta including much flooding which destroyed many businesses and homes; however $2 million was raised through private donations within hours aftermath which repaired most if not all damage done although some brick buildings still stand today providing evidence of what could have happened if these funds were not raised On November 3rd 1912 major floods again struck central part Of town swept away lots & properties but thanks To contributors $1400 was raised – almost doubling amount raised just before event & soon afterwards work began repairing damages done prior tho unusable nature of many structures—this type o’ Work never been done before or since

Augusta, Maine is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. Augusta comprises the Augusta-Butler Local School District. The first European to set foot on what is now Augusta was Captain John Smith on July 14, 1607 when he and his party of three men explored the coast of present-day Maine. After landing on an uninhabited island they named "Maine", they continued their journey southward and discovered new land in central Canada. On July 9, 1609, Smith's group landed on what is now Brunswick Island and claimed it for England as part of the Treaty of Westminster which ended the English Civil War. In 1784, English Major General James Wolfe destroyed a small French settlement at Saco Bay after an expedition failed to capture it during his campaign against Quebec City. The French quickly rebuilt their settlement and called themselves "Augusta" in honor of Wolfe's victory over them at Battle of Ile d'Orléans two years earlier. In 1802, Augustus was incorporated as a town under the name Butlersville by Act No. 291 of that year; it had been chartered as Butlersville only one day before byzoners from Penobscot County who petitioned Congress for authority to do so because they were dissatisfied with butlerism being practiced by local farmers in that vicinity without their permission or consent. The town became official on October 15th following its incorporation into the state of Maine under section 5 (1)of the Organic Laws OF Maine (1820). At its peak in 1910 there were 2,521 residents living in 158 structure known as “houses”; these have since been demolished or replaced by more permanent structures erected within town limits over time including: a library annex built in 1909; Holy Cross Catholic Church built between 1907-1912; First Baptist Church constructed between 1904-1910; Middlebury Elementary School built 1912-1920; Town Hall Annex constructed between 1928-1930 . . There are also several summertime camps operated out of Town Hall Annex which include: Camp Kettle Falls open from late May through early September every year since 1927; Camp Muskegon Heights open from mid September until early December each year since 1943 ; and Camp White Sands open from late January through early March each year since 1984
When the United States acquired Maine in 1820, it was part of the Northwest Territory. In 1824, Congress passed the Compromise of 1850 which divided Maine into two parts, one including Augusta and the other not including it. The new state of Maine was created from land east of the Penobscot River and west of the Canadian border.
