Augusta has been called "The Athens of the sea" for its close relationship with that city. The first European to come to what is now Augusta was Captain John Smith in 1609. He named it New England after his native England. In 1785, General George Washington and his army set up camp here while they were on their way from Yorktown to help secure British independence from France. The town came into being on October 7, 1821 when Augustus Cady Stanton donated land to establish a town square and marketplace near the mouth of Penobscot River. On December 8, 1826, Mayor James Ayer laid out a plan for the new town which included three blocks square with two stories each; an open air market would be located at one corner and buildings on both sides would be built as businesses - including a hotel - became necessary for settlers moving into this new community. It was not until 1830 that brick was used in place of wood in many aspects of the development including architecture and building construction because there were no trees available in such large amounts back then! The first post office in Augusta opened in 1827 and continued operation until 1915; however, most mail arrived by boat or ship so it wasn't really effective until 1865 when an omnibus service began running between Portland and Augusta providing real-time updates on local events! In 1903 President Theodore Roosevelt made his home here while he vacationed on Cape May Island before returning home to take office as president that November. His wife Eleanor stayed at her sister's houseboat "Mayflower" during his stay which sadly means we still don't know exactly how much furniture she brought along! A great deal has changed over the years since 1903 including changes within our own community itself with more peoplemoving here every year! Some interesting facts about Augusta include: It currently holds America's second largest collection of library books (behind Seattle) thanks to its public library system which opened its doors in 1907; it also has more than 12 miles of sidewalks (the longest being just east of downtown) courtesy of local resident Jim Dooley who built them himself starting in 1978; you can find almost anything you might want or need online right HEREIN'S GOOGLEDOWN ; finally but not least as always...Augusta residents are known for their delicious coffee beans!!!
Augusta, Maine is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,524 at the 2010 census. Augusta was founded on October 15, 1786 by Johnathan Baldwin and his wife Judith Keyes. It was named for King George III of England. Today's Augusta is located on the banks of the Penobscot River and lies just north of its confluence with the Strait of Belle Isle. The village originally consisted of three small settlements: Baldwin's Landing (now part of downtown), Westbridge Landing (later renamed Eastbridge), and North Bridge Landing (now known as Southbridge). In 1813, Augusta became a borough; it had no mayor or board of trustees but did have a city hall and police department. The first post office in Augusta opened in 1814. In 1821, two years after its incorporation as a borough, Augusta began to build what would become its first public building - an old gristmill called Judge's Mill which served as the town's courthouse until 1870 when the current courthouse was built. In 1830, Boston merchants James Hoyle and Isaac Brock bought land east of downtown for $25 per acre that they plan to turn into what would eventually become one of Georgia's most important agricultural towns - Brockville - but never actually began any construction because they were barred from doing so by state law at that time. American Revolutionary War veteran Captain Elijah Porter donated land adjacent to where modern-day Portland Avenue now stands in order to build a military academy called Porter Academy which eventually became Brown University; however, only about half of this project ever came to fruition due to financial problems with PECO company founder Jonathan Dayton rather than any lacklustre education prospects for students from rural areas like Porter Academy itself near Athens Junction where he resided many hours each day driving back and forth between those communities alone for business purposes during those early days before long distance telephone service made such things much more feasible). In 1828 local farmer Samuel Pope moved his family from Saco Township northeastwardly along present-day Portland Avenue – making him one thereof – starting what would be known as "Pope’s Valley" groceries store/grocery Depot on First Street east side thereof cornering Main Street south side opposite Dovercourt House later becoming home also to Monson’s Drug Store & Cafe thenceforth becoming Wigglesworth Drug Store thenceforth being finally Pope’s Hardware store having started out there earlier still being operated out front then thru various changes hands thru various names thru most recently JH Smith/Stevenson Hardware Co./Pope Hardware plaza today) until their final resting place across Beaver Street NE from present day Post Office Building next door thereto markerstone erected 2/4/2010
