When the first European settlers arrived in what is now Augusta, Maine, in 1802, they were not onlyWelcome to a new land but also to an entirely new way of life. The area that is now Augusta was then part of the French colony of Quebec. The first developer in this area was John Griggs, who built a small log cabin on the north side of present-day Park Avenue in 1806. In 1824, he opened his own store and post office at what is now Griggs Landing on the Cadillac River. In 1828, Captain George Fenton moved his family from Montreal to Augusta and started trading with local tribes for goods and animals. He soon realized that there was potential for development here and started investing in land and buildings. By 1830, Fenton had purchased over one hundred acres of land east of present-day Park Avenue and built a large brick house known as “The Gables”. This location would become one of the most important commercial areas in town during its early years. In 1840, Colonel Samuel Tilton organized the First United Church of Christ (Fenian) which met at The Gables for worship until it moved to its current location on Meeting Street around 1850. At this time, Augusta became a center for religious activity throughout New England due to its rich history with Catholicism dating back centuries. It wasn’t until 1861 when Augusta became part of Maine statehood that ammunition production began here formally under the name “Ammunition Manufacturing Company” (later merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company). It wasn't until 1865 when Augustus Cushing took over management from his father-in-law Samuel Colt that Brunswick Ammunition Plant began producing ordnance products such as rifles and cannons during World War I . During World War II , Brunswick Ammunition Plant produced munitions such as planes and tanks while also manufacturing ammunition rounds including incendiary rounds used by firefighters

Augusta, Maine is a small town located in Penobscot County, Maine. The population was 692 at the 2000 census. Augusta is part of the Bangor, Maine Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Augusta were the Menominee and Chippewa Indians who migrated from Michigan in 1828. In 1830, Captain John Griggs built a cabin on what is now Main Street. The following year, Captain Griggs and his family lost their home in a fire that destroyed much of the town center. They rebuilt some time later and named their new home "Griggs House." In 1835-36, Reverend James Kapp established a school in what is now Park Avenue. Classes began on February 14th, 1836 and continued until March 16th due to cost reasons. Mrs. Kapp also ran a daycare for children until her death in 1886 at the age of ninety-six years old. In 1840-41, Augustus organized its first township meeting which held on December 4th using funds raised by subscription from residents throughout the town area. The first election results were as follows: George Worthy (president), 1; Amos Wright (treasurer), 2; Lewis Aiken (soil commissioner), 3; Nathaniel Eaton ( assessor), 5; Ebenezer Hitchcock ( justice of peace). A post office was established at Augusta by Mr. Norton on December 24th, 1840 with Phebe Aiken as Receiver General under the name "Ebenezer Hitchcock". On November 15th 1861 it was renamed "Griggs Post Office" after Driggs family donated land for that purpose near present day Main Street corner with Park Avenue . In 1865-66 it became an independent town under its own government with Driggs serving as Mayor for two terms before he passed away in 1899 In 1925–27 it amalgamated with Penobscot County to form Augusta-Penobscot County . On July 25th 1931 it reorganized into Penobscot Township . As of 2010 there are still only men living permanently within Augusta limits although women may move into unmarried men's homes if they desire
