Auburn is one of the oldest settlements in Oxford County, dating back to 1812 when it was known as Cedar Falls. The name "Auburn" originated from an Indian name for a place near present-day Auburn on the Penobscot River. The first settler in what is now Auburn was John Fitzpatrick and his family who arrived around 1795. In 1812, they built their home on the site of today's Auburn Baptist Church. One of the early settlers in Auburn was Captain John Sibley who came to America in 1792 with General Washington and his army during the French and Indian War. This group of soldiers were among those that founded Augusta, Georgia which later became Athens, Georgia. Captain Sibley's wife, Rebecca (Betts) Sibley settled in what is now downtown Auburn around 1800 while he continued to live on Hempstead Road which ran through present day downtown Auburn and then east across US-1 to where he built his house today on First Street between Main and Pequot Streets. They had five children: John, Jameson Jr., Hannah (Hendricks), Sarah (Fitzpatrick), Maria (Savage) and Harriet Beecher Stowe who later wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin which helped lead to abolitionism in America. With such a long history there are many places within town that are well-remembered by residents or have been preserved as historical landmarks like Griggs Schoolhouse Museum & Auditorium which opened its doors September 5th 2009 after being closed for over 30 years due to vandalism; also prominent locally are local churches including Southside Baptist Church - Which stands out because it has been part of both the Methodist Episcopal Church & Congregationalist Churches - hosting services EVERY Sunday morning since 1853; old Jail cells can still be seen inside Court House Annex on Main Street just south of US 1; finally there is also Joe Hill Park located off US 1 just north of town center where sports fans can find a range of playground equipment as well as two picnic areas complete with grills perfect for barbecuing/grilling up fresh seafood!
Auburn, Maine is a small town in southeastern Maine. The population was 979 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland-Vancouver, Maine, Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first inhabitants of Auburn were the Menomonee and Moosonee tribes. In 1795, the United States set up a post in Auburn to help keep track of Indian captives being traded between Great Britain and France. The post was abandoned in 1815 when it was discovered that the Indians had already been free and moved away. In 1820, local farmers began to grow crops on land that would later become Auburn Township. In 1830, two schools were built in what is now Auburn; one for white children and one for Native American children. In 1839, John Treadwell became the first settler in what is now Auburn Township. He started a farm that would eventually produce over $100,000 worth of crops each year. In 1847, local citizens voted to incorporate as a township with a population of about 100 people. In 1901-1902, Harold Ewing developed an experimental cotton gin located in what is now downtown Auburn on State Road 6A (later renamed Main Street). This led to increased production of cotton by local farmers and helped spur economic development around town during this time period. Later that year, he donated land to be dedicated as Park Square Park which still exists today as an integral part of downtown Auburn
