Auburn, Maine is a town located in Cumberland County, Maine. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Auburn is the only incorporated community in Cumberland County. It is also the smallest municipality in Maine. Auburn was first settled in 1786 by French colonists as part of Mount Desert Island. The name "Auburn" was anglicized from Acadia during the mid-19th century and applied to all of what is now Maine excepting parts of Penobscot Bay and Knoxville Counties. In 1824, John Hogg granted land for a village on Mount Desert Island called Houlton after his father's home country, Ireland. The initial plans for Auburn were much different than those which became reality; most notably, it was proposed that the village be built on a bluff overlooking an open ocean which would have allowed easy trading with nearby settlements and facilitate shipping between islands and mainland America. However, due to financial instability caused by overpopulation on Mount Desert Island following sea grantations from the U.S., little progress was made until 1829 when George Washington leased 3/5ths of what eventually became Auburn from John Hogg for $20 per annum to develop it into a township with rights to ship goods nwward across Penobscot Bay from India throughto Boston Harbor. In 1835, James Aiken founded a blacksmith shop in Auburn which soon became one of the largest smelters in New England; however, due to competition from other producers he closed his business in 1840 citing economic difficulties as the main reason behind its bankruptcy five years later. In 1847 Milton Sabin established an insurance company businesses (Milton Sabin Life Insurance) & Savings Bank (Milton Sabin Bank) both of which remain active today within their respective communities although their services have been reduced somewhat since then due to changes within society & legislation affecting small towns such as Auburn; nevertheless they continue to contribute significant sums towards local community projects including maintaining public roads within their boundaries while also sponsoring various events throughout year including golf tournaments at local courses held outside of town limits

Auburn, Maine is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,552 at the 2010 census. Auburn is located on the mainland of Penobscot Bay and is part of the Bangor−Lewiston metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what became Auburn were three men from France who landed in 1796 and looked for land to settle. They found only barren land and abandoned their boats when they sighted an island in Penobscot Bay. The island was named by Captain John Meares after his discovery of it while sailing for England in 1801. In 1807, two Frenchmen, Jean-Baptiste Poirier and Jacques Marquette, explored and mapped much of what would become Penobscot Bay before landing at Auburn on October 25th of that year. On December 10th they reported having discovered a "large bay" extending into the Gulf of Maine which they named Lac du Razoir after then-Governor John Stevens (the man who had given them access to the harbor). In 1812 one hundred acres (40 hectares) were purchased from Captain Stevens by Major General Nathan Hale as part of a grant from King George III for use as a military post on Mount Desert Island off central Maine known as Poston Hill because General Nathaniel Purdy had been killed there during the War of 1812 against Canada. Auburn's first settler was Jabez Cobb who arrived with his family in 1825 but soon followed by others including David Levy and Israel Putnam who built cabins on what would become Main Street later renamed State Avenue after Governor James Grafton put money into it to improve roads and infrastructure around town. In 1830 two brothers - Jesse Aiken and Solomon Jernigan - started logging operations along with several other men within walking distance of town on what are now Indian Road (Route 9). It wasn't until 1861 when steam powered equipment began being used here that lumberjacking got underway which led to increased mills built over time like those mentioned above: Presbyterian Church (1872), Masonic Temple (1876), School Annexe (1910), City Hall (1911), Post Office building(1914) etc.). By 1923 all but one mill had closed down due to competition or changes in technology brought about by World War II; however some larger mills such as Wigglesworth & Company continued production until 1956 when aluminum smelting began making more difficult demands on resources causing most mills to close permanently between 1945-1956 inclusive. During World War II much activity took place ashore here including coastal artillery batteries operating out of Fort Knox Naval Base; Navy Intelligence OPERATIONS CASTLE ROYAL; various shipbuilding projects such as USS FLETCHER/USS SULLIVAN; Lighthouse SERVICE DUTCHESS/LAWRENCE lightvessels also conducting commercial fishing trips offshore during this time period although no evidence has emerged linking any connection between these activities and any terrorist activities significant enough to warrant further investigation today!
