Auburn is one of three towns in that area. AUBURN’S HISTORY Auburn began as a farming community with pioneer families from Massachusetts and New England who arrived in 1834. In 1836, the first school was built and classes were held for students from rural areas surrounding Auburn. In 1847, two roads were opened through Auburn to connect it with other communities in Maine and Canada. The first store was built on Main Street in 1850 and soon became the largest business in town. By 1860, much of what today makes up Auburn had been developed including a courthouse, cotton gin, sawmill and gristmill which continue to be used today. In 1863, mail service arrived via steamboat from Rockland County via Augusta where it continued until 1921 when an electric line was completed connecting all three towns together making it possible for people to shop online while they waited for their train or boat fares to drop! In 1912–13 Mrs., Lillian Bancroft organized a Ladies Auxiliary of the local Women’s Relief Committee which helped provide food for needy families through her grocery store/feeder program after hours (until 5 p.m.). A cause such as this could not have come about without strong support from many individuals throughout town who contributed time and money over many years! Today Mrs., Lillian Bancroft’s daughter continues her philanthropic work by organizing various fundraisers throughout town during different periods of the year; typically during Mayfest or Christmas season! Many people knowMrs.,LilianBancroft personally because she has always taken pride in doing whatever it takes to help others! In fact some may say that she has done more good for humanity than any individual ever could! Dr., Everett Peck also played an important role early on in our town’s history as he served as village trustee (from 1916 until his retirement) and later as director of public works (1928-1945). He dedicated his life to helping improve local infrastructure and ensure smooth running of government services across all municipality boundaries!DuringDr.,EverettPeck’s tenure many new streets were built including main street between downtown & Congregational Church (& Beechwood Ave.), east side between First Baptist Church & Schoolhouse Road (& Waterford Rd.), Groveland Avenue (& Park Ave.) addition to north side between Community Center & Doctor Jenssen House (& Weare Rd.).
