Auburn, Maine is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from an incident in 1837 when two men went out into the woods to get firewood and found that they could not find their way back. They named their settlement after General John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry which took place in 1859. It was not until 1896 that the first telephone line in Auburn was laid down. Early electric transportation used horse-drawn cars and carts to bring goods to market; however, these methods of transportation became uneconomic as production increased for aluminum cans and other products requiring large loads or long distances. A horse-drawn streetcar system was built between Auburn and Bangor by 1903. In 1908, a new water mill was built in Auburn by Wm Halsey & Son of Bangor for $5,000. This mill provided irrigation for many farms in Cumberland County and produced flour, oats, rice, soybeans and other vegetables for local markets. In 1916 a hydroelectric plant with power three turbines was completed at Park Falls Lake just north of Auburn; this plant supplied electricity to towns throughout Cumberland County until it retired in 1977. During World War II the Community Service Unit (CSU) program offered job training to war veterans through various organizations including American Legion posts throughout the county free of charge. The post office closed on October 10th 1944 due to lack of customers but reopened on November 3rd 1945 with new equipment thanks to donations from local business people who felt it would be important to keep local commerce open during wartime times when few opportunities were available outside of agriculture or retail trade
