Auburn, Maine was founded in 1795 by Samuel Prescott and is the oldest town in the state. The town was named for General John Caldwell, who served as a colonel in the American Revolution. Auburn's first store opened on Main Street in 1825. In 1841, it became a city.
Auburn, Maine is a small town in Cumberland County, Maine. The population was 1,609 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cumberland County. Auburn is located on the east side of the Penobscot River. The first permanent settler in Auburn was Nicholas Coffin, who arrived in 1795 and named it after his brother-in-law, Sir John Coffin (1685-1751). In 1812, Major General Daniel Boone made a landing here from his ship "Fenway" and explored what would become Maine. He named the river Penobscot because he found its banks lined with large boulders that looked like pines. In 1818, when Congress passed an act to organize Maine as a state, Auburn was chosen as its capital. However, due to financial difficulties caused by lowigrant populations moving into already sparsely populated parts of the state during this time period, Auburn fell out of favor as the capital in 1821 and reverted to Bangor until 1830 when it again regained popularity under Governor Timothy Bowdoin. In 1927–28 Averill Harriman donated land near present day downtown Auburn for use as a city park system which became known as Harriman Park. The new city hall and other public buildings were constructed on this site beginning in 1928; they are now known collectively as the Bowman Building Museum Complex (BBIM). Since 2002 there has been development project called "Auburn Hills". It consists of over 5 acres located just outside town limits on Route 622 off Interstate 95 southbound between mileposts 26 & 27 and within walking distance of most commercial areas including local grocery stores; gas stations; hospitals; casinos – all within easy reach for residents living within walking or biking distance from town center only minutes away by car or bike! This unique development offers an intrusion into rural township character that allows for much needed economically revitalization while providing high quality housing options for current & future residents not only in Town but also adjacent suburbs! Auburn, Maine is a small town located in central Maine. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Auburn is the only municipality in the town of Auburn and it is also the only incorporated town in Maine. The history of Auburn begins with two people, John and Lois Upton, who settled there in 1805. John had been born in England and his parents had come to America to find a new home. The couple started a small grocery store on Main Street and they soon became known as one of the most important merchants in their community. In 1828, they purchased land east of Main Street and built anriage poles to mark the location. They named their new village “Auburn” after their home country but initially used “Quitman” because that was what John’s father had called it when he first arrived here. The early years of Auburn were very difficult due to economic conditions during the 1830s which were characterized by widespread drought and high unemployment. However, through hard work, perseverance and sacrifice, local residents rebuilt their society and economy during this time period. They developed a strong sense of community spirit that still influences today’s life here. This spirit was exemplified by Reverend Dyer Peck who served as pastor from 1865 until his death in 1922. He was an outstanding leader for his church congregation during this time period and helped create a warmer atmosphere within their community by engaging in many social welfare projects including providing free meals for needy families during winter months! In 1881, Auburn voters chose to incorporate as a village . It wasn't long before neighbors began to call attention to our growing community because we were doing things different than other villages around us We voted to name our post office "Auburn" because we wanted our name recognition so others would know we existed . Our post office opened on Broadway just east of Main St
