Auburn, Maine is a small town located in Penobscot County, Maine. The population was 868 at the 2010 census. Auburn is known for its Agriculture industry and has been a center of production of corn, beans, onions, potatoes and other vegetables since the early 1800s. The first people to live in Auburn were the Saco Indians. They lived near what is now downtown Auburn and hunted game including deer, bear, moose and beaver. The first white person to live in Auburn was James Freeman who arrived in 1805 with his family from Rhode Island. He built a cabin on the east side of Main Street which still stands today. In 1816 Captain John Smith traveled through Penobscot County on his way to find a new route across Canada and he met Freeman along the way. Captain Smith offered to give Freeman land if he could find someone who could make it permanent. Freeman took the offer and laid out lots around what is now downtown Auburn on present-day State Road 3 (now US Route 2). In 1821 Reverend Samuel Morse came from Boston with his wife Nancy to start a Presbyterian church in rural Penobscot County. They founded Dexter Avenue Presbyterian Church which remainsded there today. Reverend Morse also helped found School District No.-2 in 1830 which included present day Auburntown as well as parts of West Penobscot Township and East Greenbush Township.
