In Auburn, Maine, the first firearms were used in a defense of the town against an attack by Indians in 1786. There was no means for citizens to arm themselves and defend themselves early on in Maine’s history. The Provincial Congress resolved to arm the people “by every possible means” but did not provide any specific instructions. A group of men from Auburn set out to find someone who could build them a gun sight. They found an old rifle barrel that had been lost in a fire and took it home with them. They cut off the end of the barrel and bored a hole through it so they could attach the bore to a piece of wood. With this new weapon, they were able to protect their town from attack

Auburn, Maine is a small town in the state of Maine. The population was 1,671 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Henderson, ME Metropolitan Statistical Area. Auburn is located on the southeastern coast of Penobscot Bay and includes most of what are now downtown Auburn and much of its north side including Woods Lake. The town was founded in 1812 by Captain André Moreau as a fur trading post on Penobscot Bay. In 1825, it became an incorporated village with a post office and school. The first courthouse was built in 1830 and replaced in 1907 by a more modern structure designed by architect Ira Deane Webb. In 1865, Auburn became part of the new Vermont colony that developed along the Kennebec River south of Augusta, Maine. In 1870, it became part of Massachusetts before becoming an independent municipality in 1901 when it merged with nearby Auburn proper to form one larger entity under common law jurisdiction. It voted to secede from Massachusetts on November 8th, 1959 after being denied municipal services such as fire protection and trash collection because those services were provided by neighboring towns which were not considered "municipal areas." On July 16th 1990 voters passed Measure 3 which amended the town's charter to allow for annexation into other municipalities if they approved a referendum proposing that plan; however this annexation never took place due to local opposition from residents who felt they had already been annexed into other municipalities without their knowledge or consent. The first post office opened in 1812 and closed in 1922 because mail service was discontinued due to war efforts; however local residents continued to send packages using horseback until 1927 when postage rates increased making shipping less profitable than ever before. In 1958, Avery Dorman built his house on what is now Main Street; this started what would later be called the "Dorman Era" for business development in the town as people began moving into central location for easier access to transportation and trade goods possible only available through inland travel acrosspenobscots bayou system then upriver at Freeport or downriver at Waterville Junction where steamboats could bring produce upriver while passenger ships brought goods downriver unloaded them at Brunswick Landing before returning upstream again). Today many buildings still standing from that time include Dorman's store/warehouse (now known as Main & Park) which stood until 1984 when it caught fire; also still standing today is Wheeler's grocery store which last changed hands back in 1978 (!), followed by First National Bank (now known as Colonial Bank) which last changed hands back in 1985 (!). There has been some redevelopment taking place over recent years with several new businesses opening up including Piggly Wiggly (owned by Walmart), TGI Fridays (owned by Subway), Dunkin' Donuts (owned by Starbucks) etc.; but overall there remains much stability within the community thanks largely to its strong sense of community spirit fostered through its culture centered around bipartisanship despite various political differences among its residents

Auburn, Maine is a small town located in eastern Maine. The population was 1,890 at the 2000 census and 2,070 as of the 2010 census. Auburn is one of the oldest towns in New England and was founded by English colonists in 1622. The town became a mill town after being granted a mill site by King George II in 1768. During prohibition Auburn had to close its bars because there was not enough alcohol available to sale. The town's only industry until recently has been agriculture with cattle, pigs, and wheat production however this has decreased as well. Today Auburn is home to several stores and services such as a post office and bank. The history of Auburn goes back to 1622 when English colonists arrived in what is now Maine looking for land that could be explored for resources such as timber and coal. They found plenty of both but also experienced some difficult times including being sacked by Native Americans while still under British rule in 1629-30 which caused some friction between the two groups but ultimately resulted in friendly relations between both sides over time. In 1768 King George II granted the town its current site on an island near Hull which made it possible for the town to grow quickly due to its location easy access to transportation and water supplies. After experiencing several financial hardships during prohibition (which led to many businesses closing) Auburn slowly regained its prosperity thanks to new investment from businessmen local and afar who saw potential in the small town’s growth story. Since then many changes have occurred within Auburn including becoming an unincorporated Village when it annexed into Portland in 1980, becoming part of Portland again when it separated from Sullivan County following a referendum held that year; becoming an incorporated municipality once again following a vote held on November 15th, 2002; gaining full city status on January 1st, 2009 after years of efforts by Mayor John Healey; annexing into Portland once more on December 5th of that year; designation as “Auburn” through incorporation onto US Route 202 effective February 3rd, 2013 finally achieving full city status upon agreeing annexation into Portland pursuant to formal ordinance passed by City Council On March 10th 2016 Today much like any other community throughout America – whether rural or urban – Auburn continues its rich historical roots through various forms of cultural expression enjoyed by locals and visitors alike: art galleries/ Museums & Galleries - numerous permanent collection items dating back centuries are exhibited each season at Aiken Fine Arts Center (a branch gallery operated out side OFM), University Art Gallery (opened 1975), Municipal Auditorium / Recital Hall (~300 capacity), Brunswick Masonic Lodge #527 & Masonic Hall Gymnasium (~400 capacity). There are also numerous concerts given annually featuring music from all over America plus international artists visiting our area throughout summer months! The first resident settler named Samuel Brown came ashore around 1814 aboard his ship "Eagle" landing about 12 miles southeast of present day Auburndale on South Saint Johns Bayou opposite present day Winthrop Harbor . When he discovered fertile land he set up house hereabouts soon after arrival . By 1830 much had changed since those early days with people coming hither along with their herds & dogs hunting gameotes deer rabbits etc………..families intermarried soon enough……………. continuous village development ensued thru out years…………………..most residents continued living hereabouts until 1965 when they left for good…………………………………. most recent occupants are descendants direct relatives having relocated HERE FROM NORTHERN MEXICO IN 1959
