Auburn, Maine is a town located in Cumberland County, Maine. The population was 712 at the 2010 census. Auburn is part of the Portland-Vancouver Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Auburn was first settled by people from Massachusetts in 1786. The town was named for General John Quincy Adams, who served as President of the United States from 1824 to 1829 and as Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1828 to 1830. In 1898, the town was renamed for General David Dixon Porter, Commandant of Fort Knox during the American Revolutionary War. Auburn had a post office from December 12, 1800 until November 9, 1903; it reopened on July 1, 1904. It has since been closed twice. The first store in town opened in October 1881 at Second and Main streets; it became known as Store No. 2 when it merged with Store No. 1 in 1886 to form the present store building which stands today on Third Street between Main and Washington Streets. In 1902-1903, an electric street light system was installed in Auburn; this system lasted until 1935 when gaslighting became common in America and streetlights were replaced by LED lights statewide. The first school in town opened on September 15th1898 at Third and Church streets under the name of Northern Pacific School District #1 (later joined by Western Union School District #2). The present school building--a two story wood frame structure--was built about 1911- 1912 according to plans drawn up by local architect Jules Leducq for use as a vocational high school for boys only (it remains one of only a few buildings still standing from that time). In 1916 general Electric service arrived here making Electricity available not only to homes but also businesses such as stores and restaurants; this service continued until 1947 when all services were discontinued due to budget cuts following World War II . A new courthouse which stood east side 3rd Street between Church & Clinton Streets was completed about 1908 but burned down about 1951 In 1945-1946 an addition was made to the south side of original courthouse which housed an Administration Building (now used as a garage) ; this addition cost $8500 . A second court house south side 3rd Street between Clinton & Hamilton Streets also burned down about 1951 although reconstructed later This building still stands today. In 1954 two schools were added: One north side First Avenue between Greenlawn & Andover Streets while anothersouthsideFirst Avenuebetween Greenlawn&Andover StreetsbecamethefirstHighSchoolinAuburnSince1900.
