In 1840, gunpowder storage capacity was increased thanks to a grant from Colonel John Starkweather of Bangor. This allowed for more frequent handgun purchases which helped increase safety within the community as well as protect against Indian raids. In 1861, gun violence reached its peak due to Confederate troop movements into town and subsequent bouts of gunfire which left six people dead or wounded. Gun accidents started becoming more common during this time as well; however, these injuries were not nearly as severe as those caused by gunshot wounds. In 1865-1866, gun control measures were put into place following the Abolitionist movement which aimed to end slavery across America. Auburn, Maine is a small town located in the heart of the Kennebec Valley. The population was 1,551 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest city in Maine and its only municipality. Auburn's rich history can be found throughout its downtown district, which is home to many historic buildings dating back to 1820. The area around Auburn has been inhabited by various Native American groups for over 10,000 years. The first European settlers arrived in 1795 and named the community after Prince Augustus of York (later King George III), who had come through southern Maine on his way to England. In 1830, a group of men from Auburn formed a local militia to support their claim to land adjacent to that of trapping pioneer John Youngs and his party. In 1865, during the Civil War, Confederate forces burned down part of town while seeking refuge near Calais Bridge on Route 2A. The resulting fire destroyed most of what remained of Auburn but left much intact including many Greek Revival-style homes built by wealthy businessmen Elias Howe and Daniel Webster opposite what is now the downtown district. In 1886, when the Maine Railroad reached Auburn from Saco via Augusta Junction along present-day Interstate 95E, railroad executives decided that an larger town than just one block wide would be more practical for growth and renamed it after their newest line's president – Augustus Cushing – as part of an effort to promote rail travel in central New England. In 1896–97 construction began on what served as both town hall and general store before being completed in 1898 with greatly improved facilities including a theater and post office building still standing today. The final phase saw major additions such as two churches (one brick) erected between 1907-1909 at corner OF Hwy 20 & Center Street; three Masonic lodges were also constructed: First Congregational (1892), Second Congregational (1898), Third Episcopal Church (1910). This development helped give Auburn its nickname "The Town That Took On The World." During World War II RAF Bomber Command use nearby Round Hill as airfield No 4 for operations over occupied France; many residents worked in RAF factories or other industries near round hill during this time
Auburn, Maine is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bangor-Bathurst Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Auburn was John English in 1824. English became a Methodist preacher and founded the first Baptist church in what is now Auburn. In 1827, he married Sarah Ayer and they began to farm in what is now Auburn. In 1830, they built a cabin on an island near the present day intersection of State Road 9 and Main Street. Their only child was born there: Anna Elizabeth Ayer English. In 1836, Abraham Winchester bought land from John English for $200 and built a house on it which served as the town's first courthouse until 1840 when another building was erected. In 1845–1847, he also built a store and blacksmith shop on land east of Main Street next to his home which still stands today as the oldest structure in Auburn. He also helped found the town's Masonic Lodge No. 5 soon after its establishment in 1849 (it still meets every other year). In 1850s local farmers started growing corn and potatoes on their farms while men from nearby towns set up stores selling goods produced by these farmers or buying goods grown by others such as those from New England or Canada; some people even raised livestock there too Church services were held at various homes before being moved to larger buildings like First Congregational Church located on current day Park Avenue between State Road 9th Ave N & 10th Ave N between 1865-1902 with further growth culminating with addition of schoolroom/library etc., through 1920s When Tiffany Middle School opened it became one of 2 high schools within Bangor-Bathurst Micropolitan Statistical Area
